New Delhi-based Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA) has sanctioned the national mission for manuscripts to Shivaji University (SU) recently.
The national project aims at conservation, cataloguing and digitalisation of manuscripts in varsities as well as private and institutional manuscripts.
A fund of Rs50 lakh has been proposed for this project in the SU.
A manuscript resource centre has been set up in the SU for carrying out the mission covering Sangli, Satara, Solapur and Kolhapur.
?SU alone has over 6,999 manuscripts with a Sanskrit manuscript Abuprabandha dating back to 1353 AD,? the mission?s manuscriptologist and epigraphologist, Ganesh Nerlekar told DNA.
Officiating librarian RK Kamat and library committee member Shivdas Jadhav will coordinate and monitor the project under Shivaji University respectively.
Nerlekar said the project will also cover digitalisation of manuscripts.
Manuscripts at different monasteries, religious institutes and museums come under the institutional category, while the private category covers those with private persons.
?Though many manuscripts contain routine religious materials, others can have a treasure of information that throws light on the aspects of society during the stated period,? he said.
?The mission will be carried out for three years. Considering the huge number of unpublished manuscripts, we are hopeful about getting many valuable documents,? he said.
The mission, established in 2003 by the union ministry of tourism and culture, has IGNCA as the nodal agency.
