Tony Pauline: NFL draft risers, sliders: Week 5

Desmond Trufant's fourth-quarter pick sealed Washington's upset over Stanford.

    Joshua Weisberg/Icon SMI

Week five of the college season has witnessed some wild games as the conference schedule starts to heat up. Thus far the final weekend in September has seen several highly rated juniors and lesser-named seniors step to the forefront as prospects continue to rise up draft boards.

    Risers

Sheldon Richardson/DL/Missouri: Richardson has improved almost weekly since stepping into the starting lineup this season and was a one-man wrecking crew against Central Florida. His 9 tackles were impressive as Richardson also forced a fumble, recorded one sack and posted two quarterback hurries. He's an athletic prospect who commands double teams and either makes a play on the ball or creates opportunities for his teammates. Richardson is not a household name yet, but highly regarded in the scouting community.

Stephen Morris*/QB/Miami-FL: Morris turned in a career performance during the Hurricanes' last-second victory over North Carolina State. His record-setting numbers included 566 passing yards and 5 TDs. While many will focus only on the numbers, Morris looked good in all aspects of the game. The junior showed great patience, awareness and made terrific decisions in the pocket. He connected on five passes of 40 yards or more, including the game-winner of 62 yards. Morris is slowly developing into the complete package, melding his incredible physical skills into consistent, smart play at quarterback.

Desmond Trufant/CB/Washington: The senior cornerback is the latest edition from the Trufant family to star at the position. He came up big during Washington's upset victory over Stanford, breaking up two passes and intercepting a throw in the fourth quarter that prevented the game-winning score. Trufant has been inconsistent in the past, yet possesses the physical skills to start in the NFL. He's expected to be a middle-round choice. Trufant will be playing on Sunday's next season like his brothers Marcus (Seattle Seahawks) and Isaiah (New York Jets).

Zach Ertz*/TE/Stanford: Ertz has proven his big-play ability all season long and looked NFL ready during Stanford's loss to Washington. The junior tight end led all Cardinal pass catchers during the contest, collecting 6 receptions and 106 receiving yards. Four of his catches resulted in first downs. Ertz is averaging just under 17-yards per reception during the season's initial four games. He compares favorably to former Stanford tight end Coby Fleener, the 34th selection of last April's draft. Like Fleener, he is also a reliable pass catcher that stretches the field, yet Ertz is much more advanced as a blocker.

Michael Mauti/OLB/Penn State: Mauti, considered a potential second-round choice entering the season, continues to impress NFL front offices. Missing almost the entire 2011 campaign with a knee injury, Mauti was effective defending the run and covering the pass during Penn State's lopsided victory over Illinois on Saturday. He finished the contest with 6 tackles, 2 interceptions and was active all game. Mauti plays smart, tough football and looks every bit like a three-down defender.

    Sliders

Akeem Spence*/DL/Illinois: Spence recorded 9 tackles during the loss to Penn State, but the statistics don't tell the whole story. The junior tackle was manhandled most of the game and pushed off the line of scrimmage or controlled in man-on-man blocking. Spence did not turn in a terrible performance, but did not look like the first-round prospect most believe him to be.

Notes: It was another tough outing for North Carolina State cornerback David Amerson. Our Week 1 slider was consistently victimized throughout the Wolfpack's loss to Miami, giving up two long touchdowns receptions in the first quarter then making questionable decisions on another pair of scoring tosses late in the game. Many touted Amerson as a potential first-round pick after the junior intercepted 13 passes in 2011, yet there are major questions about his speed and overall playing skill.

Arkansas running back Knile Davis is another NFL prospect who continues to struggle. The junior fumbled the ball three times during a blowout loss to Texas A&M, though Arkansas recovered two of the fumbles. Davis finished the game with 18 carries for 65 yards. Aggie defender, Damontre Moore, SI Videowho was highlighted in our Draft Watch video, forced the third fumble as well as totaling 5 tackles, 2.5 for a loss and one sack.

    Textbooks Create Debt

The promise that was made by Baby Boomers to Generations X and Y, flatly stating ?College Degrees=Good-Paying Careers?, is no longer valid. This is evidenced by the stubborn unemployment rate, the Occupy?movements and continuing legislation which is aimed at reducing the repayment obligations of students for the first few years out of college (e.g. Higher Education Opportunity Act; College Cost Reduction and Access Act).

According to the?National Center for Education Statistics?approximately 39% of all undergraduates were receiving financial aid in the form of student loans in 2008.? The average amount received in the academic year 2007-2008 was $9,100.? Approximately 47% of all undergrads were receiving some form of aid in 2007-2008, the average amount being $6,600.? (Note: this does not include loans which parents take out on behalf of students.)

Taking a look at costs, it is easy to see where a large chunk of that borrowed money is going ??textbooks.? The average cost of a textbook varies depending on year-published and subject-matter.? The median range of annual textbook costs are reported in numerous sources as being $700-$1,100, including the 2008 Washington Post?special report?entitled "Break on Cost of Textbooks Unlikely Before Last Bell".? Some quick number crunching: $4,000 = total textbook cost over undergraduate years; 7% = student loan interest; 5 years=repayment period.

Estimating these numbers a student would have to pay $81.30/month for 5 years to simply pay for his or her textbooks.??This does not even touch on the actual cost of education yet.

My research into McGraw-Hill and Pearson, utilizing search results of Amazon.com, Barnesandnoble.com, McGraw-Hill's and Pearson's Course Catalogs (2011), produced similar results, depending on your major.? Below is the average cost of a textbook.? The same textbooks were used across all three services (Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble and the retail price):

    Science (Data)?

    • Barnes and Noble (online): $155.05?
    • Retail price (reported by Barnes and Noble online): $177.44

    Mathematics (Data)?

    • Barnes and Noble (online): $149.23?
    • Retail price (reported by Barnes and Noble online): $165.10?

    Humanities (Data)?

    • Barnes and Noble: $79.30?
    • Retail price (reported by Barnes and Noble online): $92.28?

Please keep in mind that my numbers reflect new textbooks only.? If you are lucky enough to snag used textbooks before they are sold out, or if you are lucky enough to have a professor who does not constantly insist on the newest version available, then costs would be lower. Reducing textbook costs would make a remarkable difference to a student who needs financial aid.? Many options exist: renting textbooks, used books, e-textbooks and some even consider not buying the textbook an option.? It is time to use these options keeping the student in mind.? Textbooks do create more debt -- but they don't have to.?

Mazda MX-5 GT Concept, 2012 - Automotives Review, Luxury Car ...

    • ?Mazda MX-5 GT Concept, 2012

The Mazda MX-5 GT Concept has been inspired by Mazda's podium winning MX-5 GT race programme and its debut at Goodwood is to test customer reaction to a high performance version of the iconic sportscar. Built by race specialists Jota Sport, the Mazda MX-5 GT Concept produces 205bhp from a normally aspirated 2.0-litre Mazda petrol engine which is mated to the car's standard manual gearbox. Suspension has been uprated to improve handling and is adjustable for different track conditions, aerodynamic assistance comes from a carbon front splitter, a rear diffuser and boot spoiler. The exhaust note has been enhanced with a sports exhaust system with a central tailpipe. Recaro seats enhance the driver stability and the interior features a number of carbon enhancements that help reduce weight. For customers who want to acquire the car for track use, it comes equipped with road slicks and body-coloured roll hoops behind the seats.

Joining the Mazda MX-5 GT Concept on the stand was the Mazda Takeri sedan concept, a close indication of the design direction of the future Mazda6, along with the recently launched all-new Mazda CX-5 compact SUV, the first car to adopt Mazda's revolutionary SKYACTIV technology which improves fuel economy and reduces CO2 emissions without compromising driving enjoyment.

Mazda has entered the World's fastest and most powerful MX-5 in the Goodwood hillclimb. Sponsored by SMH Fleet Solutions, Jota Aviation, Total Lubricants and Mazda Financial Services, the Jota Sport Mazda MX-5 GT4 is currently contesting the 2012 British GT Championship and took third in class at Brands Hatch this weekend. Competing against Lotus, Aston Martin, Ginetta and Ferrari racecars, the MX-5 GT boasts a top speed of 160mph and a 0-60 time of just three seconds, making this a very special MX-5.

Drivers for the Goodwood Festival of Speed are regular Mazda racers Mark Ticehurst and Owen Mildenhall and kart racer Jade Paveley, who at just 19 years-old, is one of the youngest drivers at the festival.

SPG Nerve Block, an Innovative Treatment for Migraines and ...

It is extremely common in individuals to encounter headaches and migraines. The constant nature of such form of discomfort can cause tiredness and incapacity. If you go through these for a long period, you may need to proceed through steady, long-term treatment. But fret not; there is also a solution for migraines and headaches Lawrenceville GA that delivers effective pain relief in an instant.

    ?

There is a new innovative treatment that provides instant relief for migraines and headaches without using pills or injections. The Sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) nerve block uses a special nasal applicator to safely and painlessly relieve the pain. Other than headaches and migraines, SPG nerve block has been providing successful pain relief to a range of conditions such as trigeminal neuralgia and fibromyalgia.

    ?

SPG nerve block is a treatment that involves administration of a topical anesthetic to the sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) in the back of the sinus area. The nasal applicator has a plastic delivery tube that is soft and flexible so that it can comfortably extend to the back of the nasal cavity and put the anesthetic liquid right where it has to be applied. It includes a small flexible tip made to help minimize irritation to the nasal lining. In the nasal cavity, the anesthetic fluid is sprayed right onto the group of SPG nerves.

    ?

Also known as nasal ganglion, the SPG nerve is an interior part of the head located behind the nose and sinus area and close to the throat. It is where neurons in the head are mainly accumulated. SPG is also covered up by a thin sheet of connective tissues and mucous membrane.

    ?

The nasal ganglion plays a role in inducing pain linked with acute and cluster headaches, migraines, trigeminal neuralgia, facial pain and a lot more due to such a broad reach that the nerves from SPG spread to.

    ?

SPG nerve block Lawrenceville GA is being performed by setting the plastic tube of the nasal applicator via one or both the nostrils to apply the anesthetic. The anesthetic then tackles the ganglion area to ease several head and facial pain disorders. This procedure is conducted as an outpatient.

    ?

The SPG nerve block helps in minimizing pain from a range of head and face problems such as acute and cluster headaches, migraines, shingles, head and neck cancer pain, reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, Sluder?s neuralgia, vasomotor rhinitis, and atypical facial pain.

    ?

Studies reveal that SPG nerve block is a great solution for acute and chronic facial and head pain. In a 2009 study, SPG radiofrequency treatment had very high satisfactory results for patients with cluster headaches. Other studies indicated that the procedure worked excellently for head and neck cancer pain and for chronic vasomotor rhinitis. It brought great comfort and reduced the requirement for narcotic medication.

    ?

Obtaining relief for migraines and headaches is effortless and need not to be uncomfortable. For a person who would like to quickly get rid of chronic headache or severe migraine Lawrenceville GA, SPG nerve block may just be the answer. This immediate treatment solution requires no harmful drugs. With SPG nerve block it only uses few moments to come back your regular way of living and make it pain-free for the rest of your life.

    Facebook (for iPad)

The social network, Facebook, took its sweet time getting a dedicated iPad app to market. Nearly one year since its release, the Facebook iPad app (free) has blossomed into a full-featured app, giving users almost but not quite all the functionality they can get in the Web version. The app loads much faster than it did a year ago and now includes clear and useful access to your privacy controls and other settings. Photo viewing has improved significantly as well. First-generation iPad owners, however, won't be completely satisfied, as the Facebook app doesn't properly display Timeline on the three-year old device. And the app is missing a few other features from the Web version, like the ability to edit a comment or status update after posting it, which puts some Facebook users at a clear disadvantage, namely those who intend to use their tablet as their primary computing device. (And maybe that trend isn't strong yet for tablets, but it is for smartphones in the U.S., particularly among some demographic segements.) ?With a service as powerful and far-reaching as Facebook's, I would absolutely prefer to see all the core functionality on the iPad app and other mobile apps, in part because Facebook for iPad is one app you must download. You and your iPad would be lonely without it.

    Design
"Visual" is the name of the game with the Facebook iPad app. Photos take the spotlight. Friends appear by their profile images, with typed names minimized. Even with location-tagged status updates, photos of your friends are pinned to a large map to point out their whereabouts. The app is more of a feast for the eyes than the fingers. While you can tap, touch, swipe, drag, pinch, and otherwise put your fingers on the app, the experience plays more to the visual senses.

    Features and Navigation
The big feature worth highlighting in the Facebook iPad app is support for multiple accounts. If you manage more than one Facebook account, this feature is a huge win.

Other features largely mimic Facebook.com, which is good for consistency's sake (I value consistency, personally), but a little underwhelming if you were expecting a wholly unique experience on the iPad.

Facebook's iPad app has two top-level navigation bars: one that's blue and just has icons (friend requests, messages, notifications) and a second one that disappears when you don't need it for posting a new status, adding a photo, and checking into a venue. A right sidebar, visible in landscape orientation (it disappears in portrait mode) is dedicated to seeing whom among your friends is online now and initiating a chat with them. You can go offline and remain invisible with one tap of the gear icon.

The most important navigation bar hides off to the left and pops into view when you press the box with three horizontal lines at the upper left corner. Here you'll find virtually anything else you might need: a search bar, your own Timeline, Account Settings, Privacy & Terms, all your apps, messages, and more.

Consistent features from the website, like the news feed acting as a home page and buttons that pull up summaries of your messages and friend requests, remove any hint of a learning curve in getting to know this app. If you use Facebook, the app is amazingly intuitive.

As mentioned, there are a few features lacking, like the ability to post-hoc edit a comment or status update.

When you update your status on Facebook from the iPad app, you can include a location if you like, although you don't have to. If you do, your friends will be able to see where you are.

    Photos
Images are the big draw for the Facebook iPad app. Everywhere images are used, they're prominent! The iPad app's design really pushes visuals, emphasizing faces more than names when you browse through your list of friends, for instance. It's about who you "see" more than whom you "know."

When I first used the Facebook iPad app, I found myself looking at the profiles and photo albums of friends I hadn't seen in several years, because the app drew me toward faces rather than familiar names.

    Privacy
You can adjust all your privacy settings on the iPad app, and they've been simplified so that they're easier to understand than before. To its credit, Facebook has taken several steps to make privacy controls better for users, and allowing iPad users to adjust their privacy settings is one of them.?

    Facebook for iPad
Regardless of how much time you actually spend on Facebook, the social network is so huge and influential that most people need it for the same reasons they need email. Other people use it, and you need it to stay in touch with them.

If you're a heavy Facebook user, the iPad app provides a new and intriguing experience, one that's visually appealing and more explorative than what the other versions of the platform have to offer. The iPad app takes advantage of some of the capabilities of the iPad in an elegant way, although I wish it would support the first-generation iPad fully and give users all the core functionality found in the website.

PFT: Carroll, McCarthy disagree on final play

    Packers Seahawks FootballAP

The good news in the wake of last night?s very bad news at the end of the Packers-Seahawks game is that the NFL and the locked-out officials spent a fourth straight day negotiating on Tuesday.

The bad news in the wake of last night?s very bad news at the end of the Packers-Seahawks game is that the NFL doesn?t seem to recognize that it has gambled with the use of replacement officials ? and it has lost.

Per multiple reports (including one from Peter King of SI.com and one from Nancy Gay of FOXSports.com), the NFL has opted to stand firm on certain key issues.

First, the NFL wants a bench of replacements (they?ll need a better word than that) to serve as in-season understudies for officials who aren?t performing at an acceptable level.? King reports that the NFL won?t guarantee that the officials will work at least 15 games.

Second, the pension issue continues to prevent an agreement.? The league wants to change from a defined-benefit pension plan to a defined-contribution system.? The difference, per King, is roughly $3.3 million per year.? The officials don?t believe they should have to tighten belts at a time when the NFL continues to grow fat.

Third, the amount of the raise for the officials remains in dispute.? The officials want an eight-percent bump.? The NFL has offered an increase of 2.5 percent.? Again, the discrepancy comes from the fact that the officials believe that, as the league?s pie grows, their slice of it grows commensurately.

The NFL remains stubborn, oblivious (at least externally) to the fact that the performance of the replacement officials underscores the value of the regular officials, who operate far more efficiently and reliably in the crucible of 60,000 fans and foul-mouthed coaches and big, strong, fast players and millions of eyeballs.? The performance of the replacements demonstrates the value of the regulars, and yet the league refuses to relent.

As King explains it, the league wants to ?wrest back control of the officials? performance week to week in an NFL season.?? But the ritual of collective bargaining requires a party that wants something to give something.? It seems like the NFL wants plenty, and that the NFL likewise isn?t willing to bend.

Sure, a raise has been offered.? Why shouldn?t it be?? Everybody connected to the NFL is making more and more money.? The officials should get more and more, too, especially if the NFL wants to emerge from the talks with new powers.

When it comes to the power the NFL has amassed over player discipline, the league is quick to point out that the NFLPA has sacrificed those rights through collective bargaining.? Regardless of whether it makes sense for the league to have a bench of officials, the NFL has in past negotiations allowed the current system to emerge.? To change it, the NFL must make real concessions.

But the NFL doesn?t want to make real concessions.? The NFL never wants to make real concessions.? That?s fine, but the NFL can?t then pretend that everything is fine.

As King writes, ?Ihe NFL is willing to look at the dispute as something like a game of chess vs. a game of checkers.? The league believes that the short-term pain of a football nation up in arms will be worth it two to four years down the road if they can improve the overall quality of officiating by adding what would be a taxi squad of three additional crews.?

Or the NFL can acquire that right by paying for it.? Instead, the NFL is willing to alienate fans, anger players, and tarnish ?the shield? in order to get its way, hoping that half of the locked-out officials plus one eventually will vote to take the deal.

The NFL is taking us all for granted.? In the end, there?s a good chance the NFL is guessing right.? But that doesn?t make it right.

Advice And Tips About Web Hosting For Your Business | Website ...

Having a website means that you will eventually hear about web hosting. You may not be too familiar with what a web host is and why it?s so important for your site to have a good web host, but this article will give you the information you need to find a web host that is a good fit for you and your site.

If you will be selling products or services directly from your website, check to make sure that your web host offers SSL. This is a service that allows secure transactions, and do not underestimate the value of this. Many buyers will not give their personal financial information to a site that does that state that the transaction is secured by SSL.

Beware of web hosting services that charge very low fees, remembering that you get what you pay for. If you really only need a one-page site to direct customers to a brick-and-mortar business, then by all means go for a $5 a month provider. However, if you plan to do any kind of online business transactions, or are reliant on high-end graphics and a lot of information, then pay for what you need.

You should try to choose a web host that has his or her own personal blog. Hosts that have a blog demonstrate that they have a true passion for hosting and that they enjoy connecting with readers. In addition, this proves that they possess wisdom in web hosting and building. A blog also lets you see for yourself how popular the host is by viewing the number of responses on every post. You should be leery of hosts that don?t have a blog.

Before picking a web host, check to see if they have some type of money-back guarantee, or even a trial special where you can test their service. There should be a way to get your investment and money back if you decide their hosting service is not for you. Most hosting companies will give you around 30 days.

It is important that you back up your website on a regular basis to your own server or another location and do not rely on your host to do this. If your host goes bankrupt or if their system just goes down, you might not be able to get your data back from them.

If your website is used for professional purposes, you must be sure to avoid free hosting services at all costs. It may seem tempting if you are on a tight budget, but there are too many downfalls to make it worth your time and effort just to have constant problems with the host.

Prior to signing up with a web hosting service, ask about their firewalls. You will want to choose one who has a dual firewall in place. Not only will this protect your information during power failure or other malfunctions, but it will also be an added barrier against theft of your personal information.

Redundancy, redundancy, redundancy. This is a factor you should consider in a quality web host. With your valuable information and business demanding consistent uptime and stability, it is crucial that your host has some level of redundancy in place, such as power, data and even environmental protections. You need to have a good idea of how your investment is being protected.

    Web Hosting Providers

Always have a backup plan for web hosting providers. In the event that you experience significant and ongoing problems with your hosting service, you will want to have an alternate already researched. If you are without service for more than a day, start immediately putting your backup plan into action. This will save you the potential for even longer delays if your provider has serious problems.

Consider signing up for a 12 month web hosting contract. Many web hosting providers now offer large discounts to customers who sign up for long term contracts. If you pay for your web hosting on a month by month basis, as oppose to on a yearly contract, you could end up paying more than double for your website?s annual hosting.

Be aware that many web hosting providers are actually reservers. They do not actually own their own their web servers, so beware. You may experience delayed times for fixing problems or customer service requests. You can often get the exact same service directly from the company that they are leasing space from, so ask who that company is.

Don?t be afraid to change your web host if they are not providing you with the services that you need. There are currently thousands of web hosting providers in the market. So, if your current web host is giving you shoddy service and charging you extortionate monthly fees, it is in your best interest to change your web hosting provider today!

Don?t rule out free web hosting providers. Although lots of free hosts fill up your site with pesky advertisements that cause your site to look unprofessional, some free web hosts do not put any type of ads on your site. Remember, free hosts have the potential to save you a lot of money, as well.

If you possibly can, always choose paid web hosting. Free web hosts certainly have their place and benefits, but if you?re running a business, they might prevent you from looking professional, thereby increasing the number of consumers that are pushed away from your site. The free web hosting services usually make up for lost revenue with advertisements. You will have little to no control of these ads. These kinds of advertisements can aggravate your visitors, and they may exit your site, never to return.

Web hosting is something that you need if you have a site, so use the tips in this article to find a great web host. Take it slowly, and if you need to reread the tips here, do so. A web host can mean the difference between getting visitors and sales and getting none, so make the right choices with the help of the information in this article

Mad Ants Guard Cameron Jones Talks About Creating His Own Path to NBA

    Photo

Living and attempting to succeed in someone else's shadow is never an easy thing to do.

But that hasn't been the case for Fort Wayne Mad Ants guard Cameron Jones, who, despite being the cousin of NBA guard Landry Fields, is quickly making a name of his own. And he's using the D-League to do it.

After spending training camp with the Miami Heat last season, Jones turned heads with a strong rookie campaign with the Mad Ants. The young gun out of Northern Arizona averaged 14 points, shooting an impressive 45% from the field (and an even more solid 43% from downtown). His efforts were enough to land him on the "NBA D-League All Rookie" first team.

So as he looks to build on his success, whats next for Jones? What are his plans for next season? Take the jump for a Q&A with the Mad Ants guard in which he discusses his hopes and goals for the upcoming season, growing up with Fields, and who he's been working out with this summer!

    Star-divide

Q: Cameron, how do you feel your first season in the D-League went? Obviously you found some success, but what things are you looking to improve upon next season?

A: As an individual, I felt like my first season went really well. Making the "All Rookie" first team was great. As a team, though, I know we struggled throughout the season. It's a learning process because you just have to go out there as a group and keep playing hard. No days off. We play against some really tough competition.

Being in training camp with the Heat really helped me though. I learned a lot, being able to play against some of the best players in the world. I'd like to continue getting more efficient as a scorer, and improve my defense next season, too.

Q: As you touch upon your strengths and perhaps recognize a weakness in your game that you'd like to improve, how do you feel you could potentially help an NBA team? What do you bring to the table?

A: Obviously my shooting ability, but also my course work. I'd like to think I'm a very smart player because I'm able to understand the game. Right now, I'm focused on working towards getting to the free-thow line more efficiently, and getting physically stronger as my career goes on.

Q: As we talk about some of your goals, do you have any idea what you'll be doing next month? Are you looking to be in camp with an NBA team, or are you simply more focused on getting ready for the Mad Ants' season?

A: I'm not really sure about training camp, because I'm still waiting on stuff. The Mad Ants are definitely an option for me, and I'm also looking at some places overseas too. But I wouldn't mind going back to Fort Wayne, because the D-League has great competition and it's probably the best shot at being called by an NBA team.

Q: It sounds like you believe the D-League gives up and coming players the best opportunity at breaking in to the NBA.

A: Nowadays, that's probably the best opportunity. There are things overseas, but the advantage to playing in the D-League is that you're right here in America, able to play in front of everybody. Our games are broadcast on the website and stuff like that. It's different than playing in Europe.

Q: You mentioned last season you faced some tough competition. Obviously there are a bunch of NBA-level type guys just waiting for a shot, that you go head-to-head with. I have to imagine you played a lot against your cousin, Landry Fields, growing up too.

A: Yeah, I mean, Landry is basically my brother. I played with him in high school, and against him in college too. He's been my mentor growing up and especially this past summer. He's been pushing me and helping me get better. Being able to play with him is great because he's in the NBA already and knows what to expect. He definitely helps me out as much as he can.

Q: In addition to Landry, have you worked out with any other NBA players this offseason?

A: I've gone out with Josh Childress. We've worked out at the gym together. But other than that, you just see different guys come through every now and then.

Q: As hard as you've worked this offseason as you look to improve your game, what other fun things have you been doing to enjoy your summer?

A: I like the "Batman" trilogy. Obviously the third one just came out this summer, and it was probably one of the best movies I've seen. Landry and I are also pretty avid "Call of Duty" fans. That's our favorite game. So we like to play ball and then go in and play some "Call of Duty." That's pretty much our lifestyle.

Why Apple pulled the plug on Google Maps

Where in Sydney?is Manly? Certainly not in Balgowlah.

FORTUNE -- Unbeknownst to me, I've been feeding geographical information into Google's (GOOG) mapping database for years -- searching for addresses, sharing my location, checking for traffic jams on Google Maps.?Google, for its part, has been scraping that data for every nugget of intelligence its computers can extract. Without consciously volunteering, I've been participating in a massive crowdsourcing experiment -- perhaps the largest the world has ever seen. Who knows what I might have been teaching Google Maps if I'd been navigating the surface of the planet with an Android phone in my pocket?

Apple (AAPL), by building its much-loved (and now much-missed) iPhone Maps app on Google's mapping database, has been complicit in this Herculean data collection exercise since the launch of the first iPhone in 2007. The famous Google cars that drive up and down the byways of the world collecting Street View images get most of the attention, but it's the billions upon billions of data points supplied by hundreds of millions of users that make Google Maps seem so smart and iOS 6's new Maps app seem so laughably stupid.

In Saturday's New York Times, Op Ed columnist Joe Nocera asks: "If?Steve Jobs?were still alive, would the new map application on the?iPhone?5 be such?an unmitigated disaster? Interesting question, isn't it?"

No Joe, it's not an interesting question. It's the No. 1 clich??of the post-Jobsian era.

Besides, the decision to pull the plug on Google's mapping database at the end of what was probably a five-year contract had to have been made while Jobs was running the company.

"Not doing its own Maps would be a far bigger mistake," says Asymco's Horace Dediu, who addressed the issue at length in last week's Critical Path podcast. "The mistake was not getting involved in maps sooner, which was on Jobs' watch. Nokia saw the writing on the wall five years ago and burned $8 billion to get in front of the problem. The pain Apple feels now is deferred from when they decided to hand over that franchise to Google at the beginning of iPhone."

It's easy to poke fun at Apple's Maps app in its current state. I've had my share of laughs, starting last June (see?here?and here), and now everybody is piling on.

But the fact is, the company found itself in the position of feeding its customers' priceless location information into the mapping database of its mortal enemy. That couldn't go on forever.

Weaning itself from Google Maps will not be easy. It may be one of the hardest things Apple has ever tried to do.

If you've seen enough examples of the boneheaded mistakes Apple Maps is making and want to get a sense of what's involved in correcting them, I recommend Mike Dobson's?Google Maps announces a 400 year advantage over Apple Maps.

Dobson, a former professor of geography at SUNY Albany, was Rand McNally's chief cartographer from 1986 to 2000 and now runs a consulting service called TeleMapics.

"Perhaps the most egregious error," he writes, "is that Apple's team relied on quality control by algorithm and not a process partially vetted by informed human analysis. You cannot read about the errors in Apple Maps without realizing that these maps were being visually examined and used for the first time by Apple's customers and not by Apple's QC teams. If Apple thought that the results were going to be any different than they are, I would be surprised. Of course, hubris is a powerful emotion."

Dobson has been fielding and answering questions from readers in the comment stream of his Exploring Local blog. It's like a graduate seminar in cartography. I hope someone at Apple is auditing it.

When the Hiring Boss Is an Algorithm

I can't claim to be an industrial psychologist, but I have worked with them and written much of the software that does some of the predictive analysis that was mentioned. I can claim to have a lot of experience with how these tests work.

I have to disagree with you right off the bat here: Employment screening tests are not a sham, and there are many good things about them.

    - Has value, but primarily to the employer

Some of the predictive factors that show immediate value are used to best utilize an employee: whether they prefer working solo or in a group, whether money or recognition motivates them, if they are highly detail oriented, or whether or not they'll rock the boat (which could be a good thing! - like suggesting a more efficient process to replace an old, tried, and true one). This helps a manager provide a working environment that best allows an individual to excel, or to position people in groups so any perceived faults are covered with an overlap.

What also ends up being really important in these tests - to employers at least - is whether or not these people tend to lie, steal, or cheat, to abuse drugs or alchol, or may simply be reliable or not. Yes, if you crunch the numbers, you can take a good guess and produce a weighted prediction about this just from a personality profile.

When you're hiring for Walmart or Home Depot or some other vast chain with a large population of unskilled workers, weeding out the likely-to-be-bad ones shows a real financial impact, tens or hundreds of millions of dollars a year, statistically proven. Though the damages may not reach into the millions, smaller business owners are even more impacted by this.

    - Must be applied properly

Some businesses, like Keller Williams Reality, do not apply their personality profiling properly. They use a Jungian based personality matrix - simplified slightly - to pigeonhole an applicant. If you do not fit the hole specified for the job, you don't get the job. They even make a big deal about how everyone applying for every position is required to do this, even if it's the next CEO (which was probably a lie, but c'mon, these folks are salepeople at heart). However, they decide in advance which single personality a given job requires, and if you don't match it exactly, you're out. So if you apply for a programmer position, and you're an extrovert, you won't get the job. If you're creative - you don't get the job. You have to correspond to THEIR sterotype.

    Obviously this is wrong.

As the parent poster can probably tell you, the proper way to do it is to have your current employees take a test, sort by role, and attempt to find people who are close to the personality traits that your star individuals have in common. You'll also have to update this over time as market or work environments change.

This works because we're producing sample data, isolating trends, and using it to predict success based on commonalities. It's simple statistics. This is how we can 'catch' drug abusers and thieves before the fact: using the personality profiling tests data from criminals, we can find people who match their common traits. It may sound harsh, but the false positive outliers are exactly that - outliers. The vast majority is predictable to a reasonable degree.

Application of this information is a standard practice in risk analysis. If you're hiring for a casino dealer, and your applicant shows up as being 80-90 out of 100 match with career criminals, maybe consider a bit more carefully or do a full background check, or maybe just don't hire them - find a less risky applicant.

    - Can be gamed

Most of these tests are straightforward. There's rarely any tricks or clever 'gotchas'. This isn't like a police interrogation where they're trying to trap you. They're personality profiles, and they don't have 'correct answers'.

However, if you can successfully role take, you can determine the outcome without much guile. This is hard for many people to do, grante

U-T San Diego owner to buy North County Times

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? The owner of San Diego's dominant newspaper said Tuesday he agreed to buy the North County Times for $12 million from Lee Enterprises Inc., consolidating his grip on media holdings in the nation's 17th largest metropolitan area.

Doug Manchester, owner of U-T San Diego, said he expected to complete the purchase next month, giving him ownership of the U-T's main competitor in northern suburbs.

Manchester, one of San Diego's most prominent real estate developers and political heavyweights, bought the U-T less than a year ago and quickly planted his conservative views on its editorial pages that recently called President Barack Obama the worst president in American history.

He also invested heavily in television, building a studio at the newspaper's headquarters.

Manchester, who likes to be called "Papa Doug," gave no indication of immediate changes at the North County Times and The Californian, a newspaper serving Temecula in southwest Riverside County that is included in the purchase. He told radio station KPBS that he was undecided whether the Times will remain a stand-alone newspaper, have its own editorial board or adjust staffing.

Since buying the U-T for about $110 million last year and changing the masthead to read "The World's Greatest Country & America's Finest City," Manchester has used the newspaper to promote his pro-military and pro-business views.

He supports downtown development, including construction of stadium for the NFL Chargers, and has proposed a makeover for the city's downtown waterfront, calling it the newspaper's top priority in a front-page editorial.

Lee Enterprises, based in Davenport, Iowa, said sale proceeds would be used to reduce debt.

Lee said the North County Times had revenue of $27.6 million in the fiscal year ending Aug. 26. Peter York, the Times' publisher, said the newspaper is profitable but declined to provide a figure.

The Times and Californian had paid weekday circulation of 74,848 and Sunday circulation of 80,789 during a six-month period ending in March, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations. U-T San Diego had paid weekday circulation of 230,742 and Sunday circulation of 364,454, ranking as the nation's 24th largest newspaper.

Lee, publisher of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Arizona Daily Star and nearly 50 other newspapers, emerged from a pre-packaged Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this year, allowing it to complete the restructuring of about $1 billion in debt.

"Because of continually changing market conditions, it became increasingly apparent that the North County Times would benefit from becoming part of a strong regional operation," said Mary Junck, Lee's chairwoman and chief executive officer.

Junck was named chairwoman of The Associated Press in April and has served on the news cooperative's board of directors since 2004.

The North County Times, whose coverage area includes Escondido, Carlsbad, Oceanside and the Camp Pendleton Marine base, has 170 employees, including about 75 in the newsroom, York said. Several months ago, it began printing at The Press-Enterprise in Riverside.

Manchester applauded the Times for its coverage of high school sports and civic and charitable events.

"We want to do everything we can to keep that tradition going forward," he said.

(AP) ? Donna Karan mingled with Miss Piggy, Michael Kors judged karaoke with Kate Upton and Kim Kardashian signed perfume sets Thursday as shoppers broke out their stilettos ? and their wallets ? for the fourth annual Fashion's Night Out.

The celebrity-studded night lured shoppers into stores for celebrity spotting, music, giveaways, food and drinks, and, just maybe, shopping.

By early evening in New York, the basement beauty floor of Bergdorf Goodman was packed. Madeleine Russell of Manhattan, wearing her FNO shirt from last year, got her nails done ahead of a long line. She attends Fashion's Night Out events every year.

"I'm inspired by all the fashion around me and I get my own ideas," she said.

Like the FNO pro she is, Russell planned to head home from Bergdorf to put on makeup and her Manolo Blahniks to see Cyndi Lauper at the Blahnik store promoting her new musical, "Kinky Boots."

Across town, Kim Kardashian signed $123 gift sets of her perfume True Reflection at Lord & Taylor and was ready to hop a plane to Charlotte, N.C., for an after party for the Democratic National Convention.

"Because it is a lot of running around I wanted to be comfortable," she said. "This Tom Ford dress is, like, stretchy. So at least I'm really comfortable."

Fashion's Night Out ? launched in 2009 in New York by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour ? has proven so popular that it's now a fixture in some 19 countries, over three weeks involving tens of thousands of shoppers.

By dusk in Paris, the luxury shopping district was awash with thousands of people out to see spectacles like the one at Chloe, where a parade of dancing cheerleaders descended from a Chevrolet truck.

"There are too many people here to buy clothes. But people get to know the brands, and buy another time. Today, it's all about fun," said Corine Marneffe, 50.

In London, models Yasmin and Amber Le Bon (wife and daughter of Simon) were walking in a fashion show at the Westfield shopping center along with Lizzy Jagger (daughter of Mick).

But the splashiest events were in New York, where Donna Karan schmoozed with Miss Piggy at the DKNY store on Madison Avenue, the pig in a black dress designed by Karan herself ? fittings and all. The two fashionistas posed together with hunky New York City firefighters featured in the fire department's calendar, their ladder truck parked outside.

Michael Kors helped judge a karaoke contest with Debra Messing and Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover girl Upton at his Madison Avenue store. He called Fashion's Night Out the trifecta: "It's starting the new season, you're excited to see what's in stores. You're reminded it's fun to shop and you can feel the energy."

At the nearby Ann Taylor store, bank worker Lenore Muller of Manhattan headed inside for a chance to be made over by stylist Mary Alice Stephenson and get counted among 50 women to pose in the store's windows for the crowds outside.

"We call it window glamming," Stephenson said.

At Bergdorf Goodman, crowds out to see Victoria Beckham, Rachel Zoe and Robert Verdi wore Burger King-style hats promoting the store. A glass bar in the Donna Karan department shattered and a kid ate ice cream ? chocolate ? dangerously close to the Pucci department. Nearby Bendel's was too crowded to enter later in the night.

Pharrell was at Bloomingdale's promoting his collaboration with designer Mark McNairy. "It makes sense as fashion has given so much to me for us to try and give back and support the movement for what these guys do," he said.

Not far away was "Twilight" star Kellan Lutz, supporting the bedding collection Charisma. Fortunately, bedding is instrumental to his style. "See, the good thing about being a guy, you get the whole bed-head look waking up," he said.

At the Macy's in Herald Square, 38-year-old customer service rep Keisha Carter from Brooklyn picked up two shirts and a dress on sale, but she admitted she hadn't realized it was Fashion's Night Out ? for the second year in a row! She said she enjoyed the energy.

"People are more helpful," Carter said. "There's a busy-ness feeling, even more than usual."

In the makeup department, Lorrin Lynn, 24, a CPA, got a free makeover at Bobbi Brown after buying her special FNO lipstick. She also went hunting for reality star Bethenny Frankel showing off her shapewear line in the intimates department and "Bachelorette" star Emily Maynard at the Benefit Cosmetics counter.

"It's fun to go out to the stores, see the trends, and there's free booze!" said Lynne, cruising the night with a friend for their second FNO.

At Lord & Taylor, several hundred people lined up for Kardashian's autograph.

"Kim is the only person I put my life on pause for," said Aaron Ward, 26, a personal trainer from the Bronx who showed up at 4:30 p.m.

He bought the Kardashian perfume gift set for his mother and has purchased more than 50 other items from the Kardashian brand as gifts.

"I love Kim but I am not a girl," he added. "I am a Kim Kardashian curator."

Meanwhile, Nicole Richie and Jennifer Hudson were among a handful of designers who were promoting their creations on QVC from 9 pm to 12 midnight. "It's a dream to debut on Fashion's Night Out," said Jennifer Hudson, who had just finished a 12-minute segment selling 13 pieces of her new collection exclusive for the home shopping network.

This is the third year that QVC televised its shopping program in Manhattan on Fashion's Night Out. Company officials noted that viewership typically is twice what they see compared to other days.

Does all the starpower and hoopla help at the register? "Ask me tomorrow," Max Azria said with a laugh backstage before his BCBG presentation at New York Fashion Week. He said it can't hurt to meet shoppers.

Stores across the U.S. also held events, though less star-studded. In Chicago, Saks Fifth Avenue offered free cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and music; in Atlanta, Lenox Square Mall gave out gift bags and makeup touch ups at Aveda.

Models walked a quarter mile runway at the Galleria Dallas. The mall's fashion expert Holly Quartaro said that by the end of the night, each model will have walked a mile and a half in heels. NorthPark Center featured runway shows, beauty stations for mini-makeovers and an exhibit of Roberto Cavalli gowns.

"We've got an amazing crowd out here," said the shopping center's director of public relations, Victoria Snee, adding that some shoppers were "dressed to the nines."

Fashion's Night Out, timed for the first day of New York Fashion Week, also coincides with the final night of the Democratic National Convention. A Vogue spokeswoman said the event was planned a year in advance with thousands of retailers.

She added that Wintour is a supporter of President Barack Obama and noted that shoppers had five hours of events ? plenty of time to get home to watch Obama speak if they wish.

Thakoon Panichgul ? who has dressed first lady Michelle Obama ? planned to do just that. But the conflict didn't bother Simon Doonan, the creative ambassador-at-large at Barneys: "That's what Tivo's for."

NBG Productions analyst Brian Sozzi said Fashion's Night Out started inconspicuously but has gained traction over the years.

"It gets customers into stores in a non-peak hour after work and it gets them energized," he said. "It's a win-win for retailers who are piggy backing on Fashion's Night Out's own marketing so it's not a big investment for them."

On Twitter, Fashion's Night Out's hashtag, (hash)FNO, was one of the top trending keywords. Laura Ashley tweeted about goodie bags while designer shoe label Christian Louboutin shared a special Fashion's Night Out Spotify playlist.

Kelly Talamas, director of Vogue Mexico & Latin America, said that last year's Fashion's Night Out boosted local sales. For its second year, Fashion's Night Out Mexico more than doubled the number of participating stores, to 250 from 100 in 2011. FNO Mexico will also expand to the Mexican city of Guadalajara, where activities will be held Sept. 13.

"Mexico is one of the strongest countries in the fashion scene, there is knowledge about fashion and interest in shopping," Talamas told the AP. "All the brands representatives told us that they sold a lot. There were some who said to us: 'Wow, we sold more than ever! This has been the most successful day in the year,'" she said.
