Alaska?s biggest city is known for its love affair with skiing, outdoor sports and also, apparently, online social gaming.
?Social games? are ones played over the Internet through social networks such as Facebook, and include features such as multiplayer gameplay and rules that change as the game is played. World of Warcraft, Farmville, The Sims Social, Mafia Wars, and Words with Friends are some of the most well-known social games. In many social games, users can spend real money to gain an advantage inside the game, but it isn't required to participate.
According to data gathered in the fourth quarter of 2012 by Playnomics, Anchorage leads the U.S. media market for spending on online social games in two categories.
First, the city has the highest average revenue per paying user. (Translation: Anchorageites who pay while playing social games spend the most per person in the nation.) Second, the city has the highest monetization rate, meaning that Anchorage has the highest percentage of players who spend money on online social games, Venture Beat reports.
In addition to coming in first in both categories, Anchorage is the only city to even appear on both lists. Other cities that top the US media markets are Fargo, N.D., Lafayette, La., Eugene Ore., and West Palm Beach, Fla., among others.
