Class of 1987 asks forgiveness for school bullying

Ahead of their 25-year high school reunion, former classmates come together to make amends with a woman who was taunted for being poor. KNSD-TV's Tony Shin reports.

By msnbc.com's Sevil Omer and NBCSanDiego.com's Tony Shin

A woman says a ?Facebook poem she posted about bullying has brought pleas for forgiveness from former classmates who tormented her at a California high school 25 years ago.

Now, some of those classmates want to make amends and have asked?Lynda Frederick, 42, of Rochester, N.Y., to attend her 25th high school reunion in Escondido, Calif.,?on July 27, compliments of the Orange Glen High School Class of 1987.

??I am nervous,? Frederick told msnbc.com on Friday. ?I am looking forward to seeing them, even knowing that what has happened has happened. I have forgiven those who have hurt me in the past.?

See NBCSanDiego.com's report on Frederick and the Class of 1987

Frederick said she received phone calls, emails and Facebook messages from former classmates after she posted a poem on the Orange Glen High School Class of 1987 Facebook page.

In her poem, she wrote:

that little girl who came to school with the clothes she wore the day before
instead of asking why.. you picked on her
the little girl who had to walk to school while others rode the bus
instead of asking why.. you picked on her
the little girl who had bruises and was dirty
instead of asking why.. you picked on her
the little girl who was always crying
instead of asking why.. you picked on her

?They?re all apologizing now?for how I was treated,? Frederick said. ?I had one man call me up and we talked for an hour on the phone. He cried and cried.?I?kept saying, ?You can?t fix yesterday, so let?s fix today.??

Frederick said she posted the poem on the Facebook page as a way to send a message to her peers about how bullying affects victims.

?It never leaves you,? Frederick said. ?I wanted people to know that for the one who is doing the bullying, it could just be a phase, but for the person who is being bullied, it stays with you all your life.?

Lynda Frederick, second from right, says she was bullied 25 years ago in high school. She's pictured with her sons and daughter.

'I cried'
Lisa Wallace was among the Facebook users to read it.

"This poem touched me so bad I could not sleep. I cried," Wallace told NBCSanDiego.com.

Kristi Malone remembered Frederick and how brutal kids had been to the bespectacled brunette.

"Looking at her being bullied horribly and thinking, ?I feel so bad for her,?" Malone told NBCSanDiego.com. "But never thinking in my head that I could stand up for her, and not once did anyone back her up."

Other classmates have read the poem and many have said they feel overwhelmed by guilt.

"Just people in tears, like 'How could we have done this to her,' Malone said. They "were just crying, saying 'Why did I do that?'"

After graduation, Frederick said, she packed up her belongings and headed to New York state to begin anew.

"I needed to get out, to get away,? Frederick told msnbc.com.

Today, Frederick has three children, 22-year-old Eric, 20-year-old Bryson and 14-year-old Amanda, who is currently dealing with bullying issues at school, she said.

"She?s overweight and doesn?t wear the trendiest clothes and it?s been very difficult,? Frederick said. ?I tell her to look at the people and say, ?If you don't like what I'm wearing, if you don't like the way I look, then don't look.?" ?

She said she hopes her daughter?s classmates will change their behavior.

Organizers for the Orange Glen High School Class of 1987 reunion have collected more than $800 to Frederick an airline ticket to California for the event.

She has accepted and plans to stay for a week. She said she is looking forward to seeing everyone, no matter what happened in the past.

"She really is my hero because she succeeded through all of this," Wallace said.? "I look up to her."

Security clouds speedy Libya oil recovery

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Increasing insecurity and disruptions are overshadowing Libya's speedy return to pre-war oil production, delaying much needed foreign expertise and investment as well as threatening output.

Libya, with Africa's largest oil reserves, is nearing pre-conflict production of 1.6 million barrels per day, exceeding initial forecasts after last year's uprising against Muammar Gaddafi brought it to a virtual standstill.

However cracks are starting to appear as the new leadership struggles to impose order in a country awash with weapons. Expatriate workers remain nervous about precarious security.

The oil ministry has condemned what it called attempts by armed groups to hinder work of some companies after several violent incidents in the last few weeks.

"Security is essential and we hope we can have a better situation than what we have now," Deputy Oil Minister Omar Shakmak told Reuters. "Of course any risk to the environment has an effect not only for international oil companies but also for national oil companies."

With popular discontent simmering, disgruntled Libyans targeted the OPEC member's oil infrastructure last month when they closed off the headquarters of Libya's biggest oil producer, Arabian Gulf Oil Company (Agoco), for two weeks.

Calling for more transparency over how Libya's assets are being spent and jobs for youth, protesters prevented Agoco employees from entering their office in the eastern city of Benghazi and the company, which produces a quarter of Libyan output, said it cut production by 30,000 bpd as a consequence.

In another headache for the sector, former rebel fighters guarding oil installations in the absence of an effective national army have been calling for payment, at times violently.

Former fighters recently entered the Tripoli office of Akakus, a joint venture with Spain's Repsol uninvited. In a separate incident, a group abducted its manager for several hours, Shakmak said, calling the incident "unacceptable".

At the Zawiyah oil refinery west of Tripoli, former fighters guarding the facility barged into the administrative office calling for more money, employees said.

"It appears that Libya has raised production as high as it can without a bigger foreign presence in the country, either directly from international oil companies or from oil services companies," Geoff Porter of North Africa Risk Consulting said.

"It does not seem that Libya will be able to break through the 1.5 million bpd threshold and get back to pre-conflict levels of production without a material improvement in the country's security environment."

SETBACKS

With the bulk of Libya's revenues generated by oil sales, Tripoli cannot afford any setbacks on the one front which has seen a return to normality since last year's war.

Libyan oil company employees have held small protests calling for better security conditions and Shakmak said there were plans to increase security outside offices.

Officials have long spoken of plans to train thousands of former rebel fighters guarding Libya's oil infrastructure under an umbrella oil protection force. However progress has been slow as the central authorities remain weak and fighters hold sway.

For now, the former fighters are paid by the local firms, earning 900-1,000 Libyan dinars a month, officials say.

"I am proud of what they have done, they protected the oil fields ... I support that we should take care of them and make the payments but in a proper way," Shakmak said.

Negotiations continue between Libya's oil chiefs and the defence ministry over the force but officials there say the process is not running smoothly.

"The (Libyan) oil companies give them a salary so they don't (see the) need to join the army. This is a problem for us," Hamed El-Shalwe, director of international cooperation at the ministry of defence said. "It takes time to do this."

Though Libyan officials are sceptical insecurity could halt production, continued bouts of violence are deterring foreign firms from bringing back all their expatriates on the ground.

Libya needs foreign investment and expertise to increase oil and gas production. Those with major concessions were the first back, looking to secure existing contracts. Others send minimal staff to re-open offices and build relationships.

Until a clearer landscape emerges after June national elections, most companies are likely to defer larger deployments. "I don't expect a full expat return till the end of the year," one Western security contractor said.

Even for those visiting desert camps, negotiations with militia commanders are a must to secure safe passage.

Austrian energy group OMV warned last week it faced production and security issues in Libya that could make it hard to match pre-war output levels.

"Without foreign companies, Libyan oil production may well stagnate just below pre-crisis levels, worse, it risks slipping backward," Barclays said in a note.

Unlike Iraq, the scale of the damage was limited, but fields were hastily shut down. "Temporary fixes have allowed Libyan output to resume swiftly but we believe current production levels are simply not sustainable," Barclays said.

As they hope the June polls will give a trajectory for security, foreign oil firms also hope that questions about contracts will ultimately be resolved in their favour. Tripoli has set up a committee to look into deals and its determinations could lead to the reworking of lucrative contracts.

"With elections soon, IOCs can afford to wait and see what the political and security situation will be," one foreign oil executive said. "For now, it's still not clear."

New Evidence Released In Trayvon Martin Case May Complicate Public Debate

The debate surrounding what happened the night of Trayvon Martin's death and how the trial of his accused shooter will unfold, will become increasingly complex as the public learns new details from recently released evidence.

The State Attorney's Office officially released on Thursday a hefty collection of court documents including 67 CDs of witness statements, 911 calls, non-emergency calls, photos and surveillance videos, WESH Orlando reports.

The release is a major development and follows recently leaked information that revealed new details of the case earlier this week. But whether the information will prove beneficial to the defense or the prosecution remains unclear.

George Zimmerman killed an unarmed Martin on Feb. 26 in the gated community where Martin's father's girlfriend lived in Sanford, Fla. Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer called 911 and told a police dispatcher that Martin, who was returning from a trip to a nearby convenience store, "looked suspicious." After an altercation, Zimmerman shot Martin in the chest, subsequently telling local police that it was an act of self-defense.

Zimmerman has since been charged in the shooting and released on bond.

According to details from an autopsy report, which came to light Wednesday, Martin's death was caused by a single gunshot wound to the chest fired from "intermediate range," NBC News reported. One legal expert said that discovery alone will inevitably be a key for both sides.

"Time and space are often critical determinants in self defense cases," Ronald Carlson, professor at University of Georgia Law told The Huffington Post Black Voices. "Defendants often are at an advantage by saying 'the attacker was very close to me, I was in imminent danger of death.'"

"Intermediate range" can constitute anywhere from 8 inches to about 4 feet. Carlson said the case could rest heavily on that distance.

"If the [medical examiner] who will testify for the state comes toward the shorter range, that's not necessarily inconsistent with Zimmerman's account. But if we're out at 4 feet, then that's going to be very helpful to the prosecutor. If the evidence suggests that the person was not as close, then that puts the kibosh on the defendant's story."

Information from Martin's autopsy report emerged just one day after the medical records from Zimmerman's family physician were released, indicating that Zimmerman had a broken nose, two black eyes, lacerations to the back of the head and a minor back injury.

Carlson said the medical reports align with Zimmerman's account of the confrontation. "The damage to Zimmerman is clearly corroborated by the injuries, the location and the severity," he said. "Clearly, there was a big conflict going on."

But Benjamin Crump, an attorney for Martin?s family, said the leaked medical reports raise more questions than answers.
?You have to take all of this in full context,? Crump told The Huffington Post this afternoon. ?When someone leaks information they do it for a reason. Someone is trying to manipulate and bolster George Zimmerman?s self-defense claims.?

A number of points remain troubling, Crump said, from the information gleaned from the medical records and the fact that Zimmerman visited his family doctor the day after the shooting.

ABC News reported on Wednesday that Zimmerman sought an appointment with his family doctor to get legal clearance to return to work, which Crump said is a clear indication that Zimmerman was not as badly hurt as he claimed.

The leaked report said Zimmerman was taking the prescription drugs Adderall, which is prescribed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy, and Temazepam, an insomnia medication, said Crump.

?He was on uppers and downers at the same time,? the attorney said. ?These are medications that can cause side effects such as agitation, delusions and mood swings. That?s what he was on prior to the shooting. The question becomes, did those drugs have an effect on George Zimmerman the night he shot and killed Trayvon Martin??

ABC News also reported that the teen had traces of the drug THC, which is found in marijuana, in his system the night of the shooting.

As for the trial itself, Carlson said it could be a challenge for the prosecution simply because Zimmerman is the only witness to Martin's death. "The story line is going to be set first and foremost by the surviving party," he said. "It's not insurmountable, but it certainly gives the edge in the opening stages to the defense."

Wife of Syracuse coach Fine to speak

(CNN) -

Laurie Fine, the wife of a former Syracuse University assistant basketball coach accused of molesting ball boys, will break her months-long silence Wednesday to address what she calls false accusations in the case, her lawyers say.

Bernie Fine was fired from Syracuse in November after several ball boys came forward and said the basketball coach molested them.

Bernie Fine, who has not been charged with a crime, has maintained his innocence, saying shortly after the allegations surfaced that they were "patently false in every aspect."

Former Syracuse ball boys Bobby Davis and his stepbrother, Mike Lang, were the first to step forward publicly last year with allegations against Fine.

Another man, Zachary Tomaselli, made similar accusations later, filed a lawsuit and then admitted that he made up the story.

A prison inmate, Floyd "David" VanHooser, also made the same allegations only to recant them.

Laurie Fine made headlines last year when ESPN and the Post-Standard newspaper in Syracuse released details of a 10-year-old taped conversation with Davis that appeared to show she knew about her husband's alleged sexual abuse.

In the tape, the woman that ESPN, citing experts, identified as Laurie Fine said she knew "everything that went on" with her husband, adding that "he thinks he's above the law."

"Bernie has issues ... and you trusted somebody you shouldn't," the woman said, speaking to Davis.

The woman appears to acknowledge an inappropriate sexual relationship between Davis and Bernie Fine, saying, "It's just wrong and you were a kid."

Gary Marshall: Why Chrome for iOS is a waste of Google's time

Look out! The browser wars are back! That's what analysts at Macquarie Capital reckon, anyway: in a note titled "The Browser Wars Part Deux" they suggest that "Google Chrome Browser for iOS is Coming".

It may well be. Will anyone bar a few Google fans care?

My guess is no.

Macquarie makes several arguments for Chrome on iOS, and I reckon one of them is right and the rest are wrong. I'll start with the right one first: a Chrome browser on iOS could reduce the amount of cash Google has to give Apple for all those Mobile Safari search queries. That's true, but the other arguments - that Chrome did well on PC so it can do well on iOS, and that Chrome ads really shifted copies on PC so they'll do the same on iOS, that reviews of Chrome on Android are quite positive - don't spell Safari Killer to me.

Macquarie rightly says that Chrome on the desktop has done very well and reduced the money Google pays out to other browser makers for searches, which is significant: Firefox only lives because of Google search money. However, iOS isn't the same as 1990s-era Windows, and when Macquarie says that "there are many parallels to the browser wars of the late 1990s" I think they're wrong.

That was then, this is now

People jumped from Netscape to Internet Explorer (and back again) for all kinds of reasons, but the main reason Internet Explorer triumphed in the first browser war was because Microsoft stuck it into every copy of Windows. If history's repeating, then Google is on the losing side here: it's trying to get a foothold on somebody else's OS, an OS that already ships with a perfectly good browser.

Even if you can get iOS users to download the app, it won't work properly. As Kevin Tofel rightly says on GigaOM, with rival browsers "none of them can be set as the default browser, meaning all links in emails, texts or other apps will always open in Safari, regardless of what other browsers are installed."

Unlike the late 1990s, we're also dealing with relatively mature web technologies nowadays. Firms aren't sticking new features into their browsers and letting a million "best viewed with" icons bloom; today's battlegrounds are standards support and JavaScript performance.

I'm not convinced Google can beat Apple in the speed stakes, and the features Chrome on Android has that Safari doesn't - bookmark and tab syncing, a combined address and search bar and easy private browsing - are hardly earth-shattering or hard to duplicate.

Browsers become popular because other browsers fall out of favour. Internet Explorer was overtaken by Firefox because Microsoft effectively stopped developing it, leaving plenty of room for a better browser; Firefox was overtaken by Chrome because it was getting slow and old while Chrome was blisteringly fast. For Chrome to do well on iOS it really needs Apple to really mess up Safari. How likely is that?
