How To Keep Your Home Looking Fresh | Content for Reprint

If you're a homeowner who is looking to make some repairs or improvement, the first step you need to take is with your overall education on the matter. This can be a good idea. First, you need to understand what is involved with home improvement. If you need to educate yourself further on home improvement, checking out the advice presented below is a great way to start.

Think about installing windows that are thermally sealed, as they are attractive and cheap. This home improvement project can be quite rewarding for those who choose to do it.

Upgrading appliances is a simple way to make home improvements that will also save you money on your utility bills. When your appliances are old and inefficient, new appliances will quickly pay for themselves with their newer, energy efficient technologies. It is also easy to install appliances, so this is a choice that is both effective and quick.

You should determine what any major project is going to cost prior to beginning it. Buying in bulk is a great way to save money in the long term. You should also make your orders ahead of time for items that may take longer to deliver. Your whole project can be delayed by not ordering them in advance.

Don't forget to consider the debris and refuse generated in most home improvement projects. You will need plenty of room and possibly a rented receptacle for the debris. Demolition makes a big mess that you have to put somewhere. Make sure you have figured out ahead of time where all the debris will be placed so that you do not end up with a big pile of stuff in your way while you are trying to work.

Are you searching for home improvement ideas that are cheap and will add style and value to the home? Form some rock walls to increase visual appeal. Larger rocks may be collected free of charge. Many websites will show you how you can form your own garden paths.

In order to save as much money as you possibly can on a home improvement job, you should compare the prices for home improvement materials at multiple stores before making a purchase. A variety of retailers offer lower prices than the competition, so seek them out.

Even if certain home improvement supplies look like a great deal, you should do some comparison shopping before you buy them. It can be expensive to install new flooring, and you should shop around for the best prices. There are many options available including discount supply stores.

Chandeliers might also be a nice touch. A sparkling chandelier is ideal for adding visual impact to your living area or formal dining area; many designs are available for only a few hundred dollars. If you also want your chandelier to provide bright lighting and really sparkle, load it up with 200 to 400 watts of light bulbs.

Are you wanting to save lots of money on your home renovation project? If so, then make sure you are comparing prices for materials at many different stores before you decide to purchase any. Some stores are simply much cheaper than others, and your savings can really add up over the course of your project.

Make sure you interview all the contractors you are considering so that you can learn some more information about them. Are they experienced with homes like yours? Make sure that you and your contractor agree on what needs to be done and how much it should cost. Carefully consider their qualifications for your project by looking at their portfolio of completed jobs.

Before starting a home improvement project that involves a bathroom or the kitchen, make sure that the water has been turned off. A lot of people overlook this important step and flood their homes and end up with a even higher bill to fix the flood!

Arrange for a professional home inspection if you are buying a home. By doing this, you do not have to look for everything that needs to be replaced or fixed. Besides, the seller will not be able to contest anything the inspector finds, and you will probably find out about things you had not noticed before.

If you are about to undertake major renovations to your bathroom, consider making it accessible to handicapped persons. It's not necessary to fit all of the specialized equipment right away, but you can make preparations that will be very useful if you stick with the same house as you grow older. When you go to sell your house, doing things things can help you command a much higher price.

Avoid paying cash to your contractor in the event that you have to stop the payment. In this way, you can avoid having unscrupulous contractors skip town with your down payment. Using a credit card works too because you will be able to dispute the charges.

Use a good primer for your wall before painting if it was painted first with a glossy or oil-based paint. This will stop paint peeling and flaking by helping the new paint stick on the walls. Priming is essential when you are painting over a dark color with a lighter one, because you will not need to apply so many coats.

Located above eye level and therefore out of mind, gutters, chimneys, and downspouts are often ignored during home improvement and maintenance projects. These are important aspects of the home and they need to be cleaned and maintained to be sure they are working properly. If you fail to clean your chimney, it could catch on fire.

Your home maintenance can be accomplished in a way that will maintain your home and its value by following the tips in this article. The more educated you make yourself on the subject, the better your home improvement work will be. These tips are a great place to start.

As EU basks in peace prize, separatists on rise

Historic world port and fashionista capital, Antwerp has always lived on the crest of the wave. Now, a separatist party heading into municipal elections Sunday wants to use the city as a base for breaking away from Belgium ? putting it at the forefront of a European breakaway trend just as the EU celebrates winning the Nobel Peace Prize for fostering continental unity.

Moves toward separatism have been getting a bigger these past months as the economic crisis pushes people faster toward stark choices on nationhood and their future. It is no different in Spain's Catalonia, another wealthy region grousing that it has to pay for others in its crisis-hit country.

Scotland, too, is looking at the option of going its own way, making the United Kingdom a little less united.

Two days after the European Union won the Peace Prize for bridging ties between former enemies, Belgium holds municipal elections in which separatists hope to pick up city halls across Dutch-speaking northern Flanders. Bart De Wever, the leader of a Flemish separatist party, is running for mayor of wealthy Antwerp and has been perennially at odds with ailing French-speaking Wallonia.

If elected, De Wever plans to use city hall as a platform for the 2014 national election and an even more ambitious program of separatism.

By that time, he says, he will be counting on a "democratic revolt" at the polls.

De Wever's NV-A party already surged in the 2010 national elections, and was the main reason why Belgium had the longest period without a government on record ? at 541 days. Coalition-building was paralyzed as the separatists sought concessions to give Flanders as much autonomy as possible.

It didn't work out and De Wever ended up in opposition facing French-speaking socialist Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo, a staunch defender of the Belgian nation-state. But De Wever is the frontrunner in Sunday's Antwerp vote, and his party is likely to surge across Flanders, polls have shown.

For De Wever, the municipal elections are not primarily about parking spots or ring-roads. They are about the fate of the 6 million Flemings in the kingdom of 11 million, and he chides Di Rupo for imposing too many taxes, sapping too much money from Flanders.

"Little by little, the Flemings don't take that anymore and they are worried about their wealth," De Wever said.

The city is still dripping with exterior signs of wealth, though. The Antwerp fashion designers have turned the historic center into a magnet of conspicuous consumption, its gothic and baroque landmarks are examples of sumptuous renovation, its MAS museum an icon of contemporary design, and its famous port is still thriving.

Separatism is also rife in Spain ? a country at the center of Europe's crisis with a youth unemployment rate of more than 50 percent.

While De Wever was making reasoned arguments in a political debate last Sunday, the 98,000-capacity Camp Nou of FC Barcelona was already a scene of seething Catalan foment for the famed encounter against Real Madrid.

Real Madrid is still identified with the unified Spanish state and was met with a mosaic of color cards forming the red-and-yellow stripes of Catalonia's "la senyera" flag. At one stage during the match, incessant collective shouts of "Independence!" cascaded down the stands as fans waved the pro-independence "estelada" flag.

Last month, 1.5 million Catalans took to the streets in Barcelona to call for a separate state in the biggest march since the 1970s. Catalonia's regional government voted on Sept. 27 to hold a referendum on Catalonia's self-determination at a date still yet to be set. The Spanish government says this would be unconstitutional.

Spanish prime minister Mariano Rajoy said on Tuesday that those seeking independence for Spain are making "a mistake of colossal proportions."

But Rajoy, like many of his fellow European leaders, is in a bind: National governments have had both to cede power to the supranational EU and to regions demanding greater autonomy and local accountability.

"People are anxious because the European Union seems far away," said Prof. Hendrik Vos, head of Ghent University's Center for EU Studies. "That is why there is this yearning to keep things close."

And local control has become ever more important for rich pockets of Europe.

"Those regions say how hard they had to work for their wealth," Vos said, "and they don't want to throw it away or share with the rest of the EU."

Federal plan designed to create large solar energy plants

The Obama administration has formally adopted a plan to help create large-scale solar energy plants, offering incentives for solar developers to cluster projects on 285,000 acres of federal land in the western U.S and opening an additional 19 million acres of the Mojave Desert for new power plants.

The plan places 445 square miles of public land in play for utility-scale solar facilities.

The program, announced Friday by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar at an event in Las Vegas, will apply to new projects only and not the 17 solar facilities already awarded permits or the 78 currently in the approval pipeline.

"This historic initiative provides a road map for landscape-level planning that will lead to faster, smarter utility-scale solar development on public lands," Salazar said.

The plan establishes 17 solar energy zones in six Western states, including 154,000 acres in California. The zones were chosen because they avoided major environmental, cultural or other conflicts. The policy encourages developers to select sites within zones by promising minimal environmental reviews and expedited permitting and a range of additional financial incentives.

But developers can sidestep the zones under certain conditions. Companies may construct plants on 19 million acres designated as "variance" zones, but the government offers fewer incentives to build there. Another 79 million acres are in exclusion zones, where no energy development is allowed.

California has 2 1/2 times more acreage in solar zones than any other state. The state has 750,000 acres in variance areas.

Some conservation groups fought to prevent approval of utility-scale projects in the region, contending that the desert ? home to scores of endangered plants and animals ? was not capable of absorbing industrial-scale projects.

"We are ... disappointed to see that vital habitat for the federally threatened desert tortoise is still open to potential development through the variance process," said Jamie Rappaport Clark, president of Defenders of Wildlife.

Critics contend that the policies are too late, coming after years of free-for-all leasing that encouraged rampant speculation. Since leasing began, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management has been working to process more than 300 solar applications.

Many of those are for land in California's Mojave Desert, where counties have seen the cost of private land soar and the desert given over to thousands of acres of mirrors.

Earlier this week the Interior Department announced that it had surpassed a milestone ? authorizing the first 10,000 megawatts of power. The fast-tracking of solar facilities on public lands is expected to generate nearly 24,000 megawatts of renewable power by 2030, officials said.

But so far, the unprecedented urgency given to solar energy projects on public land has yielded only 50 megawatts of produced power, according to officials.

Janine Blaeloch of the group Solar Done Right supports renewable energy but said wholesale development of the desert is a mistake.

"This should all be happening on rooftops and in cities," Blaeloch said. "But that wouldn't profit the big utilities, and industry wouldn't be able to get tax breaks, so we wreck the desert instead. We aren't getting that public land back. Once it's industrialized, everything that lives there and everything we enjoy about it will be gone."

Scientists identify trigger for explosive volcanic eruptions

Saturday, October 13, 2012

Scientists from the University of Southampton have identified a repeating trigger for the largest explosive volcanic eruptions on Earth.

The Las Ca?adas volcanic caldera on Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, has generated at least eight major eruptions during the last 700,000 years. These catastrophic events have resulted in eruption columns of over 25km high and expelled widespread pyroclastic material over 130km. By comparison, even the smallest of these eruptions expelled over 25 times more material than the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallaj?kull, Iceland.

By analysing crystal cumulate nodules (igneous rocks formed by the accumulation of crystals in magma) discovered in pyroclastic deposits of major eruptions, the scientists found that pre-eruptive mixing within the magma chamber ? where older cooler magma mixed with younger hotter magma ? appears to be the repeating trigger in large-scale eruptions.

These nodules trapped and preserved the final magma beneath the volcano immediately before eruption. Dr Rex Taylor, Senior Lecturer in Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton, investigated nodules and their trapped magma to see what caused the eruptions. He found that the nodules provide a record of the changes occurring in the magma plumbing right through to the moment the volcano erupted.

Dr Taylor says: "These nodules are special because they were ripped from the magma chamber before becoming completely solid ? they were mushy, like balls of coarse wet sand. Rims of crystals in the nodules grew from a very different magma, indicating a major mixing event occurred immediately before eruption. Stirring young hot magma into older, cooler magma appears to be a common event before these explosive eruptions."

Co-author of the study, Dr Tom Gernon, Lecturer in Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton, says: "The analysis of crystal nodules from the volcano documents the final processes and changes immediately prior to eruption ? those triggering the catastrophic eruptions. The very presence of mushy nodules in the pyroclastic deposits suggests that the magma chamber empties itself during the eruption, and the chamber then collapses in on itself forming the caldera."

The Las Ca?adas volcano is an IAVCEI (International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior) Decade Volcano ? identified by the international community as being worthy of particular study in light of their history of large, destructive eruptions and proximity to populated area.

Dr Gernon, who is based at the National Oceanography Centre at Southampton's waterfront campus with Dr Taylor, adds: "Our findings will prove invaluable in future hazard and risk assessment on Tenerife and elsewhere. The scale of the eruptions we describe has the potential to cause devastation on the heavily populated island of Tenerife and major economic repercussions for the wider European community."

Turkish PM slams UN Security Council over Syria

ISTANBUL (AP) ? Turkey's prime minister sharply criticized the U.N. Security Council on Saturday for its failure to agree on decisive steps to end the 19-month civil war in Syria.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan told an international conference in Istanbul that the world was witnessing a "humanitarian tragedy" in Syria.

"If we wait for one or two of the permanent members ... then the future of Syria will be in danger," said Erdogan, according to an official translator.

Russia and China ? two of the five permanent members of the Security Council ? have vetoed resolutions that sought to put concerted pressure on Damascus to end the conflict and agree to a political transition.

Erdogan called for a reform of the Security Council, which he called an "unequal, unfair system" that didn't represent the will of most countries.

He spoke as Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu was meeting with Arab and European leaders amid growing tensions between Turkey and its southern neighbor Syria.

Davutoglu held talks early Saturday with Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby and was due to meet later with German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle and the U.N.'s envoy on Syria Lakhdar Brahimi.

On Wednesday, Turkey intercepted a Syrian passenger plane en route from Moscow to Damascus and seized what it said was military equipment on board.

Syria denounced the move as air piracy, while Russia said the cargo was radar parts that complied with international law.

Syria's state-run news agency reported Saturday that Damascus supported a proposal by Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to find a "mechanism of direct security communication between Syria and Turkey."

SANA reported that Syrian government officials and Russia's ambassador in Damascus discussed ways to establish a joint Syrian-Turkish security committee that would "control the security situation on both sides of the border in the framework of respecting the national sovereignty of the two countries."

Turkey has made no comment on the proposal, and it is unclear whether Moscow has presented it to the Turkish government yet.

Advice from a recovering diabetic

Today?s Featured Comment

From basketcaz

I am a diabetic. My diabetes has been out of control for over 7 years.

I can barely walk my feet hurt so much from nerve damage. I am lucky that is the worst of it as kidney failure, blindness, amputation are common and would have been symptoms to ?look forward to? if I hadn?t kicked my carbohydrate addiction.

My boyfriend also has diabetes. We were both becoming sicker and sicker. Doing large amounts of insulin and oral meds. every day. We both have switched to 20 carbs a day food plans. My boyfriend has lost almost 60 pounds (in 4 months), no longer does ANY insulin, and his last A1C was 5.3? which is normal for a non-diabetec!

Alas, I am not responding that brilliantly. Forty pound loss and still doing one shot a day of insulin. My A1C has gone from 11.4 to 6.8 in less than a year.

Any time I feel tempted, I remind myself about how much better it is to do one shot of insulin a day rather than FIVE!? We both feel great. The 20 grams of carbs a day is from vegetables.

If you are obese, pre-diabetic, or diabetic, PLEASE think about this. The sugar cravings do decrease if you stick to the 20 or less carbs a day because your body switches from burning carb to fat. Soon you won?t really feel hungry any more. A lot of other positive changes occur from cutting wheat from your diet. You will have more energy and you will be more alert.

Recovering diabetic,

Megan

Europe cocaine seizure means more bananas for zoo

(AP) ? A major cocaine seizure in Europe turned out to be good news for the animals at Rotterdam's zoo.

The drugs were hidden among boxes of bananas, and the fruit went to the monkeys and other creatures at the Blijdorp zoo.

Dutch prosecutors said Friday more than eight tons of cocaine was hidden among the bananas on a ship from Ecuador. The drugs were seized Monday in the Belgian port of Antwerp, while the bananas were allowed to continue on to Rotterdam ? the shipment's final destination. Dutch police arrested a Belgian truck driver and four Dutch men on Tuesday.

Dutch authorities say the seizure is the biggest ever in the Netherlands or Belgium.

Amazon.com down for some, sporadically

16 hrs.

Bad news for folks who were rushing to do some online shopping on Friday morning: Amazon.com went down for some.

Based on an overwhelming number of tweets declaring that the popular online retailer's site was down, attempts by several NBC News editors to access the site, and a peek at the handy-dandy DownForEveryoneOrJustMe.com, it seems that the Amazon site was either down in certain regions or sporadically timing out.?

We've reached out to the folks at Amazon to see what happened and will update when we know more.

Surfing and Instagram Make for Incredible Photos [PICS]

[More from Mashable: ESPN?s ?Social Highlights? Mash Ups Show Big Moments From Fans? Lens [VIDEO]]

Ah, Instagram. The photo sharing that can't be stopped. Its gauzy filters have moved far beyond brunch photos and whimsical shoe-shots to become a hit in all sorts of other subjects, sports included. Teams, athletes and fans from the NBA, NFL, Major League Baseball and pro soccer leagues have all flocked to the service to document and promote.

But perhaps no sports translates to Instagram as well as surfing. Give it just a little thought, and it's not hard to see why: Nature, waves and extreme situations are a pretty enticing recipe for photo success.

[More from Mashable: 17 Tips From Instagram?s Power Elite For Amazing Travel Photos]

For a deeper look, we recently caught up with Aaron Carrera, social media editor at Surfer magazine. Surfer has 116,000 followers on Instagram -- from what we can tell, easily the most popular account related to the sport. (Its Instagram handle is @surfer_magazine.)

Carrera says the magazine has increasingly used Instagram over the past year to build its online community, promote the work of its all-star photographers and stay relevant to readers while they're on the go. Lately they've even found success bringing fans back to their online store by posting occasional pictures of merchandise.

"We have the world's best surf photographers and they're on board with what we're doing socially -- they understand it's helping them as well as our brand," Carrera tells Mashable. "We're sharing photos fans can relate to and appreciate."

SEE ALSO: Instagram Hits Sports Illustrated?s Hallowed Pages [EXCLUSIVE]

Shots from renowned and gorgeous surf spots around the world have become highly sharable for the magazine, routinely picking up more than 15,000 likes from the magazine's followers. Zak Noyle is one photographer whose images are especially popular, and some of his work appears in the gallery above.

Despite surfing's unique status and his magazine's advantageous position for Instagram engagment, Carrera looks to the more mainstream sports world for ideas as well.

"I follow a lot of other magazines, like Sports Illustrated, to see what they're doing," he says. "I'm a huge San Francisco Giants fan, too, so I like to see how they manage posting photos just of the team while also incorporating the marketing aspect of it too. They do a really good job of blending marketing and team content."

So what makes a surf photo pop on Instagram? Not totally unique to the sport, Carrera points to striking colors, unique angles and -- of course -- sunsets as reliable ingredients for success. But there's still that ethereal bit of surfing magic that can't be replicated.

"Instagram just gives people a quick little getaway," he says. "If they're stuck in their cubicle, they can get this quick little escape to Bali and think about where they want to go surfing next."

Click through the gallery above for a getaway of your own, then let us know which shot you like most in the comments.

Ubuntu One reaches Mac in beta, completes the cloud storage circle

For all of the many directions Ubuntu One's cloud storage has gone, it hasn't headed the Mac's way. Official clients have been the province of Linux devotees (naturally, Ubuntu is recommended) and their Windows friends across the aisle. A newly available Mac beta puts all three major desktop platforms on an even keel, very literally -- the OS X port is almost identical to what you'd get in Linux or Windows, including a few rough points where other interface concepts clash. Still, the Ubuntu One test build has a handy Mac-specific menu bar item, and it's one of the few cloud options that will natively support both the Ubuntu box in your den and the MacBook Pro in your bag. Grab your copy at the source link if you can deal with a few unfinished elements.

Blood cells may offer telltale clues in cancer diagnosis

Blood cells may offer telltale clues in cancer diagnosis [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 12-Oct-2012

Postdoctoral Research Fellow Devin Koestler is a biostatistician in the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. He develops and applies statistical methods to large volumes of data, seeking new approaches for understanding disease, cancer in particular. Koestler and his colleagues are investigating the potential use of white blood cell variation as a diagnostic, predictive, and research tool in the study of non-blood cancers.

"There is promise here for a new diagnostic tool," says Koestler. "What we show here is not ready for immediate clinical utility, but I think it is on the right path."

Koestler is working in the Quantitative Biomedical Sciences program with Professors Margaret Karagas and Jason Moore. His focus is the development of computational and statistical tools for investigating the process of DNA methylation.

In methylation, a molecule known as a methyl group (chemically CH3three hydrogen atoms and one carbon) attaches itself to the DNA. When this occurs, the DNA function can change dramatically. An example might be the methyl group blocking the expression of a tumor-suppressing gene.

Koestler is the first author on a paper with Karagas and a host of colleagues from Dartmouth, Brown University, Oregon State University, the University of Minnesota and the University of California. Its subject is methylation in leukocytes (white blood cells) and their association with cancer in tissues and organs other than blood, such as bladder or ovarian cancers.

"When we have an illness or a disease, that does something to our immune system," Koestler explains. "It responds by providing whatever cells are necessary to combat that threat. In the blood, the leukocytes supply that immune response."

Methylation has been studied in biopsied cells from cancer patients, in comparison to cells of cancer-free individuals. "Those studies have compellingly shown there are very striking differences in methylation patterns between cancer and cancer-free subjects," Koestler says. "This brought us to also look at patterns of methylation in blood."

The new studies, in which Koestler took part, showed differences in methylation patterns in the leukocytes of cancer patients versus cancer-free individuals. There are different types of leukocytes, referred to as subsets, each of which exhibits its own signature methylation pattern. The proportions of these identifiable subsets shift, depending on the kind of disease they may be combating.

Using data from studies of ovarian, bladder, and head and neck cancers, the researchers demonstrated statistically significant correlations between the specific cancers and the methylation signatures that characterize leukocyte subsets.

"What made our study unique is that we had the methylation data on the individual leukocytes themselves, enabling us to connect the dots, and better understand the mechanisms underlying the results from previous studies."

Analyzing the relative proportions of the leukocyte types in the blood sample can help predict the onset of a particular cancer or identify and diagnose a cancer in progress. The alternative of sampling a patient's blood is far preferable to undergoing an invasive surgical biopsy.

The advantages of using methylation patterns to assess proportions of white blood cell subtypes in cancer research extend beyond the bedside to the lab bench. Archival blood samples frozen and stored at some time in the past can now be used as research material, whereas existing methods typically require fresh blood samples with intact cells to assess white blood cell subtypes.

How To Use Twitter For Customer Service - Business Insider

This post originally appeared at Open Forum.?

Consumers have gone social, and businesses are overwhelmed.?

With a tweet, Facebook status update or Instagram picture, customers have more ways than ever to publicly praise or criticize your business.?

Customer reviews are more important than any marketing you could pay for because they're seen as more credible, says Ron Kaufman, author of the?New York Timesbestseller?Uplifting Service: The Proven Path to Delighting Your Customers, Colleagues, and Everyone Else You Meet.

Kaufman says that?businesses can take back the power and leverage social media for their own benefit.

"Tell happy customers to go ahead and be social about their great experiences and encourage unhappy customers to come to you via social media so that you can make it right and improve your overall service,? Kaufman said.?

He gave us seven tips from his book for how to use social media to leverage customer service:?

1. Make it easy for customers to be social.?Create a forum section of your website where they can relay good or bad experiences. Then, you are more likely to see what they say about your service. This can help you to identify strengths and fix weaknesses.?

2. Say "thank you."?Be sure to show your customers appreciation for their feedback. But don't offer an incentive, like a discount, for a review. This "dilutes the authenticity" of the review, Kaufman says.?

3. Invite your customers to speak out.?During a business transaction, simply mention your Twitter, Facebook or forum page. Simply encouraging them to reach out can result in good publicity for you.?

4. Ask how you can improve.?Then thank them, even if they provide negative feedback. This "how can I help?" attitude breeds trust and loyal customers, Kaufman says. It also ensures that they'll go to you?and not the general public?with a problem.

5. Start a social program.?Kaufman cited United Airlines, which made a customer service review part of its mobile app. Customers can recognize great service simply by putting an employee's name into their app. This can improve company morale and engages the customer.?

6. Use social media to create an FAQ.?What questions do people ask the most? Keep track of frequent inquiries on social media and create a base of frequently-asked-questions and answers. Your customers will appreciate it.?

7. Make talking about your brand irresistible.?Offer customer service so great that people will want to share with others. Kaufman cites the Ritz-Carlton hotel chain. After a customer's child lost his stuffed animal, the hotel staff found and returned it. But they also took photos of the toy around the resort to show how great its "extended stay" was. This pleased the customer and resulted in good attention for the hotel chain.?

?Your customers? voices are vital to your organization,? says?Kaufman. ?Social media provides an incredible opportunity to engage those voices."

Halloween Top 20 (#7): Pops! ? The Full Moxie:: Celebrity ...

Being an avid fan of cake pops, marshmallow pops and really, all things confectionary, means I am also a big fan of scouring the Internet for ideas and being a big fat looky-loo.

Pinterest, of course, is the best vehicle for this. BUT I have also found a few sites that just always have fun edible things to marvel at.

Doing one better: instead of me trying to recreate such ingeniousness (and doing a shotty job), today?s Haloween Top 20 is actually an amalgam of DIYs I found done by others that you, too, can do. ENJOY!

Used Q-Tips:

Via Workmanfamily.com

Who wouldn?t want to surprise family and friends with these incredibly delicious yet totally creepy little snacks? Carmel-dipped mini marshmallows on skewers, otherwise known as Used Q-Tips. I saw this DIY on The Workman Family blog, along with several other very cute, very easy Halloween nibbles.

Skull Pops:

Martha, Martha, Martha? Is there anything you cannot do? This is such a simple, adorable idea which involves marshmallows, candy sticks, black licorice and black licorice drops for the eyes. ?Sure, nobody likes black licorice but EVERYbody likes clever and these are darn clever.

Skull Cake Pops:

Bakerella, the reigning queen of cake pops, has a whole slew of the COOLEST Halloween pops on the Interwebs. While the cake pops are all the same basic recipe (see our tutorial here), Bakerella?s beautiful photos show off her truly creative decorating ideas. Among them: skulls, Wolfmen, pumpkins, witches, mummies and monsters.

Mummy Cookie Pops:

Cookie pops look incredibly easy to make. Essentially the same idea as a cake pop, except it?s an oreo, a stick, a dip and decorate. No baking involved! And who wouldn?t love so snack on these cute little guys? HowDoesShe.com offers a basic tutorial on cookie pops, and several Halloween decorating ideas.

Blood Sucker Slides:

While technically not ?pops,? these are suckers and suckers are usually pops and just go with it. As a fan of the show ?Dexter,? I was immediately enthralled by this idea.I mean, why not serve your guests a little biohazzard nosh, AMIRITE?? For full instrux, be sure to visit Forkable.com.

SAN JOSE, Calif. ? The second episode of WWE Main Event continued to make Wednesday nights on ION Television the latest destination for high-octane WWE action. The featured contest pit bitter rivals Randy Orton and Big Show at odds with one another in a rematch from their recent No. 1 Contender?s Match on SmackDown. Plus, Kofi Kingston battled Michael McGillicutty, and WWE Main Event?s first title match was made for next week!

Big Show def. Randy Orton (PHOTOS | WATCH)

Based on their respective interviews before the contest, there was no love lost between The World?s Largest Athlete and WWE?s Apex Predator. The bitter rivalry intensified on SmackDown two weeks prior, when Big Show defeated Orton in a World Heavyweight Title No. 1 Contender?s Match. The World?s Largest Athlete took advantage of an attack by Alberto Del Rio before that match, injuring The Viper?s ribs. On WWE Main Event, though, Orton struck with a fast-paced offense to keep Big Show reeling. The rib injury soon came into play, however, with a powerful blow from the giant stopping Orton?s momentum.

Big Show?s strategy was effective in keeping The Viper on defense throughout the contest. Orton?s injured ribs seemed to be easy targets for the massive fists of The World?s Largest Athlete, and though WWE?s Apex Predator managed to execute an impressive DDT from the third rope, his gigantic opponent was able to roll out of the ring following an RKO.

Relentless, Orton attempted a second RKO at ringside, but Big Show resisted, tossing Orton into the side of the ring with his ribs absorbing the impact. Reeling in pain, Orton?s ribs became the target of a series of huge elbow drops and two Colossal Clutches before Big Show secured the victory with a chokeslam.
