LONDON ? The Spanish women's water polo team made the most of its Olympic debut, using a balanced attack to beat China 11-6 at the London Games.

Anni Espar scored three times, while Pilar Pena Carrasco, Maica Garcia and Jennifer Pareja each scored twice Monday for Spain.

Behind sharp outside shooting, the Spaniards broke open a 4-4 game with a five-goal run to take control halfway through the third quarter.

Ma Huanhuan led China, which finished second at last year's water polo world championship, with three goals.

The win puts Spain atop Group A, which also includes Hungary and the United States.

The Rural Blog: One story of health insurance and health reform ...

Here's a story for every news outlet in the United States, no matter how small or large: Randall Patrick of The Kentucky Standard?in Bardstown shows how the federal health-care reform law is having an effect at the individual level by telling the story of Bonnie Varnell, right, a local resident who was uninsured and is more than $65,000 in debt due to her fight against cancer.

For 18 years, Varnell worked at a daycare that didn't offer health insurance. She wasn't able to buy individual coverage because she had pre-exisiting conditions as a result of surgeries. She is only 59, so does not qualify for Medicare, and she didn't qualify for the federal law known as COBRA, which "allows workers to keep their company group health insurance benefits for up to 18 months after leaving their jobs, as long as they pay the entire premium," Patrick explains.

As a result, the bills kept mounting, despite hospitals giving the Varnells reduced rates through charity care. "I've been trying to pay something on every one," Varnell's husband Ed said of the bills he receives and has to delay paying in full. "It's really frustrating. We had never been late a day in our lives."

Now, Varnell has health insurance through a program created under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. "It costs her $315 a month and covers most of her costs after the deductible is met, but the law stipulates that a person with a pre-existing condition must be uninsured for at least six months before she or he can be eligible," Patrick explains.

Varnell's fear now is the program will be taken away if the Affordable Care Act is repealed after the November election. Patrick gives opponents of the law their say. (Read more)

Varnell is among the estimated 15 percent of people in her county who didn't have health insurance in 2009,?the last year for which estimates are available. For the Census Bureau website with estimates for every county, go here.?

All eyes on swimming as Olympic tickets row rumbles on

American swimmer Ryan Lochte was gunning for his second gold medal of the Olympics on Monday as Games organisers aimed to quell concerns over empty seats by making thousands of tickets available.

Lochte, who got his Games campaign off to a flier on Saturday when he crushed compatriot and long-time rival Michael Phelps to win the 400m medley, suffered a reality check on Sunday in the United States' relay loss to France.

The 27-year-old will line up in the 200m freestyle final against China's Sun Yang, who will also be targeting his second gold of the Games after his win in the 400m freestyle on Saturday.

Phelps, meanwhile got his individual campaign back on track as he began the defence of his 200m butterfly crown.

The American eased through his heats early Monday to book his place in the semi-finals.

"I am pretty happy about this morning, that is all I need to be," said Phelps, who has held the 200m fly world record since 2001 and hasn't been beaten in a major international competition in the event over the same period.

Three other individual finals on Monday night promised explosive action: the men's and women's 100m backstroke and the women's 100m breaststroke.

Meanwhile the talk of the pooldeck on Monday continued to be the remarkable world record-breaking display of Chinese teenager Ye Shiwen in the 400m medley on Saturday, which has been greeted with scepticism in the British media.

Ye sought to dispel the clouds of suspicion surrounding her performances in London, denying the existence of doping in Chinese swimming.

"There is no problem with doping, the Chinese team has a firm policy so there is no problem with that," Ye said.

Monday's four swimming medals are among a total of 12 up for grabs across all competitions on Monday.

Host nation Great Britain, still awaiting their first gold of the Games, will be hoping diving star Tom Daley can challenge for honours in the 10m synchronised platform final where he competes with partner Peter Waterfield.

The first medals in artistic gymnastics will be decided with the men's team final event, where China and Japan will attempt to put poor qualifying displays behind them to challenge for gold.

Japan and China, the dominant force in Beijing in 2008, had been expected to fight it out for the major honours in London, but they were eclipsed by the United States, Russia and Britain on Saturday's opening day.

China were leading the medal table with six golds after Sunday's action but their hopes of adding to their tally early Monday suffered a setback when Zhu Qinan lost out in a 10m air rifle competition won by Romania's Alin Moldoveanu.

Away from the medals, Great Britain and Argentina will meet in a men's field hockey after recent tensions between the two nations on the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War.

At Wimbledon, Roger Federer and Serena Williams look to reach the last 16 of the tennis tournament.

Meanwhile under-fire London Olympic organisers (LOCOG) continued to face criticism over the banks of empty seats which have been seen across various venues since the Games got under way on Saturday.

Some 3,000 tickets from international sports federations were "put back in the pot" and sold to the public Sunday, LOCOG said amid growing public anger over empty seats.

Organisers have blamed the unfilled seats on accredited officials and members of the media who have failed to take up their reserved places.

LOCOG communications chief Jackie Brock-Doyle admitted however that the re-distribution of accredited seating was "not an exact science".

Learn To Use Credit Cards Wisely With This Great Advice | Creative ...

Consumer advice is a commodity itself these days, especially when it comes to credit cards. This piece will give you some education in your use of credit cards and issue avoidance. It is much easier to get a credit card than it is to use it wisely, so many people end up in financial trouble.

Every month, pay at least your credit card?s minimum payment. Should you skip a payment, you are likely to notice a negative effect on your credit history, which makes future attempts at obtaining credit more difficult. You may also have to pay costly fees if you miss a credit card payment.

TIP! Always review your statement each month. Make sure that each new charge is accurate.

Check into all fees and charges that go along with a card for which you are thinking of applying for, not just the interest rate and APR. You may find application fees, fees for cash advances or service charges that nullify any benefits the card offers.

Credit Card

Be sure you have the self-control before beginning to make use of a credit card. Some are tempted too much and overspend using credit. These people should think twice before applying for a credit card. When they decide to open a credit account, they?re making themselves prone to having a bad financial future.

TIP! If you can obtain a credit card with your picture on it, you should do so. While there might be a fee associated to this type of credit card, it will lessen the chance of someone using your card.

Make sure you are smart when using a credit card. Don?t buy everything you want, limit yourself to what is financially responsible. Before any purchase, make sure you have the money to pay back what you?re going to owe; this is a good mindset to have. If you carry a balance, your debt will grow and the total balance will be harder to pay off.

Credit Card

Before you ever use a new credit card, it is important to carefully read through all of the terms of the credit card agreement. The first time you use your card is often considered to denote acceptance of the agreement terms. The print on the agreement may be small, but it is important to read it carefully.

TIP! Use credit cards only when you don?t have other options available. Otherwise, try using your debit card.

Don?t hesitate to call your credit card company if you are ready for an increased credit limit. Most card issuers will increase your limit as long as you have shown that you can use the card responsibly and pay it on time. With the increased spending power of the higher limit, you can be more flexible in your finances.

Credit Card

Always read every letter you get regarding your credit card. Written notice is all that is required of credit card companies before they change your fees or interest rates. If you have an issue with these changes, you have every right to cancel your card.

TIP! If you are searching for a new credit card to apply for, you should try to find a card that offers practical rewards that you can make use of. A credit card which offers frequent flyer miles has no benefit if you do not fly often.

Always check over your monthly statements for your credit cards the second you receive them. Verify the accuracy of the charges that appear on the statement. By keeping up with your bills and checking them thoroughly each month, you will be able to catch any problems right away. Contact the credit card company by phone or email right away if you notice any fraudulent or incorrect charges.

Never use passwords or pin codes on credit cards that are easy to figure out. Information like birth dates or middle names make terrible passwords because they can be easily figured out.

Credit Cards

TIP! Keeping two or three credit card accounts open is a sound financial practice. You can improve your credit score by managing these cards responsibly, especially if you keep from carrying month-to-month balances on the cards.

Keep only a few credit cards. Having more than one credit card can be a challenge, as you have to monitor spending for each card. Having only a few credit cards will help you to be able to successfully monitor the amount of money you spend on each card and will help you keep debt low.

Again, it?s very easy to get yourself into trouble with your credit card use. One or two expensive purchases that you cannot afford can severely damage your credit rating and send you to the poor house. Hopefully, the tips you just read can help you avoid these financial problems

Sorting out detainees' legal rights : SCOTUSblog

The chief judge of the federal District Court in Washington has assigned himself the task of sorting out the rights of detainees at Guantanamo Bay to meet with their lawyers.? The move by Chief Judge Royce C. Lamberth grew out of a new move by the Obama Administration to strictly limit the lawyers? access to their clients, when a detainee?s court challenge has been ?terminated.?? The judge?s order, issued Friday,?is here.? It followed a suggestion made by Justice Department lawyers in a filing on Thursday.

One key issue that Judge Lambert may have to decide in this new review is whether, in fact, the rights of detainees have been ?terminated? by a loss in court of an initial habeas challenge?.? That could implicate?the question of whether the constitutional right to go to?court to contest detention, established by the Supreme Court in the 2008 decision in Boumediene v. Bush,?has ? in effect ? an expiration date.

Earlier this month, lawyers for two Guantanamo detainees started a new challenge, claiming that the Administration was switching from having a federal judge decide when a lawyer can meet with a detainee at the U..S. military prison in Cuba, to an arrangement?in which the commanding general there would have the final veto power over such access.? (The blog reported on this challenge in this post?on July 13.)

The dispute arose when detainee lawyer David H. Remes was told he could seek permission to meet with his clients at Guantanamo in August only if he were willing to sign a new ?memorandum?of understanding? that?imposes?a series of new restrictions on that access, as well as on the lawyers? use of information that they obtain in talking to their clients.?? Remes refused to sign, and filed his challenge.? In his court papers, he contended?that the new restrictions run?counter to? orders that have been followed for at least four years on counsel access, under a judge?s supervision, and would undermine the lawyers? ability to represent their clients.

The government, in its response on Thursday, acknowledged the new arrangement.? It told Judge Lamberth that it would allow Remes to meet with a number of his clients in August, if he would sign the new memorandum.? It promised that, for this one visit, Remes?s signing of the document would not go beyond this trip, that he would not be understood to have endorsed the new arrangement, and that?his agreement this time would not bar him from seeking to challenge the new arrangement.? This one-time arrangement, the document said, would make it unnecessary for the District Court to move with ?unnecessary urgency? to resolve the entire counsel access issue.

The Department said that the plea for continued counsel access has now been made by at least six detainees who no longer have active cases challenging their detention, and suggested that more are expected to make the same request.? It is advisable, then, the Department argued, for a single judge on the District Court ? preferably Chief Judge Lamberth ? to take on the task of resolving the issue for all cases in which the issue arises.

?Consolidation before a single judge for a decision on behalf of the entire court would avoid duplication of effort, avoid the potential for inconsistent decisions by individual judges, and bring about a more efficient and speedy resolution to this important issue,? the Department argued.

Although this request served to put the matter before the Court, the government?s filing gave no hint that it is prepared ? on its own ? to relax the new restrictions.? In a negative tone, the document said the detainees were seeking a permanent court order ?guaranteeing their counsel continued access to a military detention facility on foreign soil.?? The Supreme Court in its Boumediene decision, however,?had given detainees? a constitutional right to go to court, with a lawyer?s help, to challenge detention at a site over which the U.S. government has complete control and thus was not the equivalent of a military post overseas.

The government document?stressed that the new arrangement to restrict the lawyers? activities would be limited to detainees who ?have no case pending? either because they have lost their initial habeas challenge, or have withdrawn it.

Remes and other lawyers for detainees have contended that the rights their clients have been given by the Supreme Court to challenge their ongoing detention do not lapse with a single loss in court, but may be pressed anew, if new facts arise, or if detention becomes further prolonged, thus raising new issues about its validity when an individual continues to be held even though no?war crimes charges are contemplated for many at Guantanamo.

In Judge Lamberth?s response, he took on the issue of counsel access for decision by himself alone, he set an August 6 deadline for the Justice Department to file a full response to the detainees? challenge to the new arrangement, and set an August 13 deadline for the detainees? counsel to reply.? He scheduled a hearing for 10 a.m. on August 17.? The?Lamberth review?will now proceed as a new case, under District Court docket Misc. No. 12-398.?? All documents are to be filed in that case.

PFT: McKinnie will report to Ravens camp Monday

BET's Rip The Runway 2012 - ArrivalsGetty Images

Bryant McKinnie?s back in Baltimore, with an apparently bad back.

McKinnie told Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times he?s been missing from Ravens camp because he slipped and fell outside his South Florida home and twisted his lower back.

?I had an accident. I?m over it. I?m here to play football,? McKinnie said.

McKinnie?s been MIA since camp opened and was placed on the reserve/did not report list, incurring fines of $30,000 per day.

?Of course, I?m glad to be back,? McKinnie said. ?I?m kind of disappointed, though. ?I?ve been training hard, I?ve been boxing and doing all this stuff. To have a setback like this is disappointing.

?Why isn?t anybody saying I got hurt? I don?t know what people thought was going on. How I got hurt is running out of the house. It was slippery and I fell and hurt my lower back. You can?t be playing football when your back is hurting. When I fell, I said, ?I know I ain?t going out like this.??

McKinnie?s bewilderment at anyone wondering where he was ignores one significant point: With him, it?s always something.

The Vikings ran him off for being overweight, and he?s worked to get that under control with the Ravens. But they?ve moved Michael Oher to left tackle for the moment, and may be inclined to leave him there, if McKinnie can?t get on the field and do something.

Samir Nasri banned for 3 matches by French FA

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:20 p.m. ET July 27, 2012

PARIS (AP) -The French Football Federation banned midfielder Samir Nasri on Friday for three matches because of his undisciplined behavior at the European Championship.

Nasri issued an expletive-laced rant at a journalist following France's 2-0 defeat to Spain in the quarterfinals. He previously made a sarcastic gesture with his finger over his mouth and yelled "Shut your mouth!" at another journalist after scoring in the opening Group D match against England.

The ban rules Nasri out of a friendly against Uruguay next month, and 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Finland and Belarus.

Three other players appeared before the FFF's disciplinary hearing on Friday because of their misbehavior at Euro 2012.

Winger Jeremy Menez was given a one-match ban, while winger Hatem Ben Arfa and central midfielder Yann M'Vila escaped with reprimands.

Menez swore at captain Hugo Lloris during the same match and M'Vila left the pitch without shaking the hand of France coach Laurent Blanc or that of Olivier Giroud, his replacement.

Ben Arfa was involved in a heated changing-room bust-up with Blanc following the 2-0 defeat to Sweden in the final group match, reportedly angering the coach by speaking on his mobile phone while Blanc was addressing the players following the defeat. Blanc turned down a new contract offer after Euro 2012 and Didier Deschamps is now in charge.

Jean Mazella, who heads the disciplinary committee, told RMC radio that the players "did not apologize" but that they "regretted what they said and how they behaved."

Menez was represented at the hearing by his lawyer.

"He regrets what happened. It was an error of youth," lawyer Carlo Alberto Brusa said.

The incidents undermined Blanc's attempts to rebuild the national team's image following the 2010 World Cup under former coach Raymond Domenech. Striker Nicolas Anelka received an 18-match ban after insulting coach Raymond Domenech in the dressing room during the tournament in South Africa.

Several players - including captain Patrice Evra - received shorter bans for their part in a training-ground strike in protest over Anelka being sent home.

Searching for Sugar Man: movie review

'Sugar,' the story of the search for a musician whose career is resurrected, is a real-life fairy tale with a happy ending.

By Peter Rainer,?Film critic / July 27, 2012

Singer-songwriter Rodriguez comes back into the spotlight in the documentary 'Searching for Sugar Man.'

The elusive American singer-songwriter named Rodriguez, the subject of Malik Bendjelloul's Sundance favored documentary "Searching for Sugar Man," recorded two cultishly acclaimed albums in the early 1970s that went nowhere, whereupon he left the music scene.

Unbeknown to him, his recordings found their way to South Africa, where his lilting, frequently banned anthems about social and political injustice found an appreciative audience of mostly young, white anti-apartheid activists. Because Rodriguez, who was bigger than Elvis there, was such a nowhere man, most assumed he was dead. (Sadly, he received no income from his South African stardom.) It's a scenario that could only have arisen in the pre-Internet era.

In fact, Rodriguez had been living in the same rundown Detroit neighborhood where he started out ? his Mexican father had come to Detroit to work in the auto industry ? and made his living in construction while raising three daughters. He even once ran for mayor of Detroit.

"Searching for Sugar Man" is about how Bendjelloul and a number of devoted fans reclaimed Rodriguez, at age 70 and serenely humble, and resurrected his career ? which, partly as a result of this film, is once again in full swing, with a national tour this summer and a newly remastered CD from Sony's Legacy label of songs recorded more than 40 years ago. Better late than never. This is a real-life fairy tale with a remarkably happy ending. Grade: B+ (Rated PG-13 for brief strong language and some drug references.)

Google's Death Valley drive with the click of a mouse

Imagine being the only driver on a two-lane asphalt highway as the stark desolation of Death Valley National park passes on each side and the crystal blue sky stretches up from the horizon.

Or picture a tight left turn on Yosemite's Glacier Point Road where in the east iconic Half Dome suddenly appears against a backdrop of the snow-capped High Sierra.

The Google Street View service that has brought us Earth as we might not be able to afford to see it ? as well criticism that some scenes along its 5 million miles of the globe's roadways invade privacy ? this month has turned its 360-degree cameras on road trips through five national parks in California.

"Everyone likes to take a road trip through a national park," said Evan Rapoport, the Street View project manager, who was inspired by a cross-country camping trip he took after graduation. "Bringing unique places to people that they might not go in the real world is unique to Street View."

The company sought permission from the Department of the Interior before filming in May as drivers hit the road in vehicles rigged with 15-lens cameras that point in all directions, Rapoport said. The camera fires off still images at intervals depending upon the speed of the vehicle, then custom software blurs faces and stitches all of them together into an ever-advancing 360-degree panorama.

Click right and see orange-hued boulders formed from cooling magma. Click up and squint into that fireball of a sun hovering over the southeast California desert in Joshua Tree National Park, which is featured with the others along with the forest-dense Sequoia & Kings Canyon and Redwood National Park at Crescent City near the Oregon border.

Stop in the middle of the virtual road and do a 360 without worrying about being rear-ended by a ubiquitous RV.

The project was part of a Street View "refresh" of California that involved a trip down Highway 1 along the Big Sur coast, including the famous Bixby Creek Bridge that spans the mouth of a coast-hugging canyon.

Is it part of a master plan to capture people in a virtual world?

"I sure hope not," Raporport said. "Part of our goal is to inspire people to see these places in person."

As national park attendance continues to decline, officials welcome this unique virtual visit as a way to keep fans connected and inspire others to experience the sights in person.

"I often wish we could get the word out on some of the park system's lesser known wonders," said Candace Tinkler, chief interpreter at Redwoods, with its massive trees that can live 2,000 years and soar up to 350 feet. "This is a wonderful opportunity for people around the world to connect to these places."

The parks join other Street View features like a snowy glide down one of the ski runs at Squaw Valley of 1960 Olympics fame, or a walk around the gardens of the Louvre museum in Paris. Rapoport would not say whether other U.S. national parks are being considered for this special look."

Joe Zarki at Joshua Tree says the virtual drive could be used to show tourists at the 1,200-square-mile park's peripherally located visitors' centers that the flat expanse of desert changes to a landscape of boulders and the namesake towering yuccas within an hour's drive.

With summer temperatures hovering near 120 degrees and heat stroke warnings common, this time of year only the hearty visit Death Valley, which at 282 below sea level boasts the lowest locale in the U.S.

"We're often the forgotten big park," said spokeswoman Cheryl Chipman of the 3,000-square-mile park that is the largest in the lower 48. "I think it will make people want to come to the park. This (United) Kingdom loves its horses

LONDON (AP) ? "A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse!" comes the cry from one of Shakespeare's great characters. King Richard III would have had his plea answered at these Olympics.

While it's often said that Britons are very good at seated sports ? think rowing and cycling ? this is shaping up to be the year of the horse at the London Olympics. Among the highest profiles are the queen's granddaughter, Zara Phillips, who is competing for Britain in three-day eventing, and a horse co-owned by Ann Romney, the wife of U.S. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, which is taking part in the dressage competition.

And there is no better place that this (United) Kingdom to focus on the equine world. Every morning, the dust of Rotten Row, a sweeping dirt path in London's Hyde Park, rises from the patter of cascading hooves. Venerable steeds from the queen's military regiments are practicing so they can glitter at Royal Weddings carrying uniformed riders wearing shiny tasseled helmets.

Then there are horses that support the Household Cavalry's massive drums. Achilles and Mercury are not only known by name, but hold the rank of major when on parade. How can you not love that?

British eventing team competitor Mary King hopes the high visibility of the British riders will encourage more people to take up riding throughout the country.

"We hope this will get more bums back in the saddle," said King, a decorated Olympian competing in her sixth games.

First and foremost in this calculation is Phillips, the 31-year old daughter of Princess Anne who won a berth on the British Olympic equestrian team after a series of blistering performances on the country's rain slogged courses this year. Phillips, the 14th in line to the British throne, will draw cameras from around the world to the equestrian venue at Greenwich.

And if that weren't enough, her very famous relatives might be spotted in the grandstand ? cousin Prince William and his photogenic wife Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge.

Phillips competes in three-day eventing, a grueling sport that combines the disciplines of dressage, show jumping and cross country. She rides High Kingdom, a 16.2 hands high (5-foot-6-inch) bay gelding.

And then there's Rafalca, the 15-year-old mare owned by Ann Romney, being ridden by Jan Ebeling of the U.S. dressage team.

The Romney/Rafalca duo has proved to be a godsend to Republican critics. Comedian Stephen Colbert has lampooned dressage as the sport of the well-to-do ? but at least he noticed it. Rafalca has also been a gift to American equestrian writers, who suddenly find dressage on Page One, rather than in the Olympic stats section.

Princess Haya, the head of the international equestrian federation, FEI, told the AP in an email that her sport has more than just outstanding athletes and horses.

"What makes equestrian sport truly exceptional however is not the participation of athletes who may be famous by virtue of their status; it is the magic that is created by the perfect harmony of horse and rider," she wrote. "Horses do not understand titles or connections. ... Equestrian sport is one where men and women, the young and the not so young, the disabled and the able-bodied compete together, and where the horse is the great equalizer."

Riding is also truly a life-long sport.

Japanese dressage rider Hiroshi Hoketsu, who turned 71, is the oldest athlete at this summer's Olympic Games. He first competed in 1964 in his home city of Tokyo.

Another remarkable example is Ian Millar, who first competed at the Olympics 40 years ago, in Munich in 1972. This summer the 65-year-old "Captain Canada" will be making his 10th Olympic appearance.

But will young people flock to the stables, hoping to ride like Zara? Will the little girls who ride ponies in Hyde Park ? helmets strapped around the chin, boots tucked into stirrups ? become big girls who chase medals at the next Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and beyond?

Not necessarily, says Stephen Greyser, a Harvard University professor who has long studied the games.

Greyser said while there's plenty of evidence to suggest that non-famous people who rocket to the fore at the Olympics sometimes make others interested in their sport, there's little evidence it works the other way around.

He cited the example of snowboarder Shaun White, aka the "Flying Tomato," who secured back-to-back Olympic gold medals in halfpipe and drew people to the sport because of his fluid grace on the snow as well as his shock of long red hair.

But Greyser said the media are attracted to celebrities themselves, not necessarily their sport.

"I think a famous person has an opportunity to draw attention, but not necessarily to turn an entire sport into something more popular," he said.

Still, half the lenses on the planet will probably be turned on Phillips rather soon.

"But that's more a media thing," he said.

Stronger storms may destroy ozone

Extra water vapor up high coul trigger destructive chemical reactions

Web edition : Thursday, July 26th, 2012

Climate change may spur the destruction of ozone in unexpected parts of the globe.

In a warming world, many scientists believe, severe weather will become more common. That could be a problem in part because powerful rainstorms have the potential to erode ozone above the United States, researchers report online July 27 in Science.

?For 30 years, we?ve studied the problems of ozone loss and climate change separately,? says team leader James Anderson, a Harvard atmospheric scientist. ?Now it?s pretty clear that climate change appears to be linked directly to the loss of ozone.? High-altitude ozone acts as a protective shield, blocking ultraviolet rays that can cause skin cancer.

Anderson and his colleagues stumbled on the unexpected connection while studying strong summer storms fueled by rising heat. During missions from 2001 to 2007, NASA planes flying close to the edge of space spotted water spewed high into the sky by convective storms over the U.S. The goal was to gather useful measurements for figuring out how high-altitude clouds form and trap heat.

But the data also revealed a possible threat to ozone molecules floating 15 to 20 kilometers up. Large storms often left behind extra water vapor in this part of the stratosphere, the remnants of melted ice crystals propelled upward.

That vapor could set the stage for a chemical chain reaction, Anderson says. Aerosol particles swollen with water can dissolve airborne hydrochloric acid. The acid can then react and form other chlorine compounds, including pairs of chlorine atoms. Sunlight cleaves those molecules, spitting out unstable chlorine atoms that break down ozone.

?It?s the same chemistry as that going on above the Arctic and the Antarctic,? says Anderson. Chlorine from human-made chemicals has chewed seasonal holes in ozone above Antarctica and caused thinning above the Arctic. These ozone-destroying chemicals are being phased out under the 1987 Montreal Protocol.

The team?s calculations suggest that the havoc wreaked by water vapor could continue for days after a storm, as humidity levels slowly fall. As much as 25 to 35 percent of ozone, over a horizontal distance of 100 kilometers, could be annihilated in a week.

?I was surprised that so much ozone could be removed in such a short time,? says Dale Hurst, an atmospheric chemist at the University of Colorado Boulder?s Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences.

For now, the danger exists only on paper. Actual measurements tracking chlorine compounds in the stratosphere would help to confirm whether the damage is taking place and, if so, how widespread the problem may be. And while many climate simulations do call for more strong storms as temperatures continue to rise, the future is still somewhat fuzzy. A warmer atmosphere would hold more moisture but would also weaken the wind shear that whips up extreme weather.

?It?s a bold idea that raises more questions than it answers,? says Andrew Dessler, a climate scientist at Texas A&M University in College Station. ?But this is what great scientists do; they come with ideas that spur people to start working on new things.?

1,000 STEPS

AP's Stephen Wade reports from the Olympic venues:

Arrive early. Be patient. Wear comfortable shoes.

That's my advice for anyone coming to the ExCel arena to watch one of seven events ? table tennis, weightlifting, judo, taekwondo, boxing, wrestling and fencing. The venue's cavernous. I counted taking about 1,000 steps walking from one end to the other. About right. The main "boulevard" runs past dozens of exhibitions halls. Must be 600-700 meters long (2,000 feet).

I mean, it dwarfs the venues in Beijing. That's saying something.

Parachutist Fearless Felix jumps from 18 miles

Skydiver Felix Baumgartner has done it again.

The 43-year-old Austrian plunged to Earth from an altitude of about 96,640 feet Wednesday ? more than 18 miles. He landed safely near Roswell, N.M.

It's the second stratospheric leap for "Fearless Felix". He's aiming for a record-breaking jump from 125,000 feet, or 23 miles, in another month. He hopes to go supersonic, breaking the speed of sound with just his body.

Longtime record-holder Joe Kittinger jumped from 102,800 feet in 1960 for the Air Force. Kittinger monitored Wednesday's test jump from Roswell.

Just like in March, Baumgartner ascended in an enclosed capsule lifted by a giant helium balloon. He wore a full-pressure suit and used parachutes.

NASA is paying close attention to this Red Bull-funded project.

CORE autosport scores double podium in Canada

BOWMANVILLE, ONTARIO, CANADA, ??Sunday, July 22, 2012:? CORE autosport continued its amazing 2012 run in Canada today by again placing both cars on the podium at the 2012 Mobil 1 Presents the Grand Prix of Mosport.? In five American Le Mans Series (ALMS) races so far this season, CORE has had both cars on the Prototype Challenge (PC) podium.
?
The #05 Composite Resources ORECA FLM09 with drivers Jon Bennett and Colin Braun had a solid race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park but a combination of traffic and minor car difficulty relegated them to the second spot (seventh overall) in the two hour and 45 minute event.? The sister #06 Soloson Import machine, driven by Alex Popow and Ryan Dalziel, suffered from an on-track incident, and through a combination of sheer determination and racing "luck" rounded out the PC-class podium in third (eighth overall).
?
In the five races thus far in the 2012 ALMS season, CORE autosport has finished on the podium 10 times - with four wins, two seconds and four third place spots.? The Rock Hill, SC-based team remains with a comfortable lead in the 2012 ALMS PC team championship standings.? In the PC driver standings, the rivalry between the two CORE autosport cars looks to increase, as the #05 Braun / Bennett team has now caught up with Popow for a three-way first-place tie.
?
Despite a rainy morning on the day of the only Canadian ALMS round of the season, the weather gave way to heat and humidity.? Bennett started in the #05 machine in the class pole position thanks to the efforts of Braun on Saturday. After an hour of racing at the 2.459-mile, 10-turn road course, Bennett was handed the #05 to Braun in second spot at approximately the halfway point of the race.? Braun set a series of fast laps but was unable to capture the top spot on the podium - a place to which he'd become accustomed after two wins in the previous two rounds.
?
Popow started second in the #06 Soloson Import car, and it was in less than one lap that he was leading the PC class. After quite a duel with another PC car, he remained in first until 38 minutes into the race, when, while trying to pass a slower GTC car heading into Turn 3, they made contact.? It was only then when Popow realized there was another PC car on the other side of the GTC car.? Those two cars ended up off the track and the #06 car was left with a damaged nose and splitter.? After quick work by the #06 crew for repairs, Popow was back on track in the fifth spot.
?
Unfortunately the ALMS determined that Popow was guilty of avoidable contact and stopped the #06 on pit road for two minutes.? Those two minutes decimated any chance to recover the time lost due to the racing incident, but Popow kept fighting.? With less than an hour to go to the event Popow turned the #06 over to Dalziel, still in the fifth spot.? Dalziel pulled out a determined effort to eventually bring the #06 home in third spot.
?
Next up for CORE autosport is the 2012 Mid-Ohio Sports Car Challenge, at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.? Practice for the event begins on Thursday, August 2, with qualifying on Friday the 3rd.? The two hour and 45 minute race will take place on Saturday, August 4 at 1:05 p.m.

Snedeker, Scott out front, but Woods lurking again

LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England (AP) ? With a nifty shot out of the bunker and an emphatic pump of his clenched fist, Tiger Woods made one thing clear: He's right back in the hunt for a 15th major championship.

Now, he's got to show he can finish the job on the weekend, which used to be a mere formality.

After Brandt Snedeker romped to another bogey-free round, with Adam Scott right on his heels, Woods provided the most memorable moment of Friday's second round just as the light was beginning to fade at Royal Lytham & St. Annes.

He set it up by dumping his approach at No. 18 into a greenside trap. Then, with everyone figuring he'd settle for no better than par, Woods swooped the ball over the lip of the bunker, up onto the green, where it bounced a couple of times and rolled right in the cup for a birdie.

Woods let out a scream and thrust his fist skyward, having closed within four strokes of Snedeker's 36-hole score heading to the weekend.

"I'm very pleased where I'm at," said Woods, who was 6-under 134 after two straights 67s. "We're at the halfway point and I'm right in the mix."

The third round began under sunny skies, with perhaps just enough wind to fly a kite on the shoreline of the Irish Sea. PGA champion Keegan Bradley took advantage of the calm conditions to shoot an early 2-under 68. Joost Luiten turned in a 69. The blustery conditions are supposed to arrive Sunday, which would make all those bunkers and the high grass even tougher to avoid and possibly allow others to get into the mix.

Then again, the forecast can't be trusted in these parts.

No matter the weather, what a weekend it could be ? especially if, by chance, Woods and Scott should end up in the final group on Sunday.

Woods' longtime caddie, Steve Williams, now works for Scott. There's no love lost between two guys who used to be so close, until Woods' personal life fell apart, his game got off track and he fired the one who'd been on his bag most of his career.

Let's not forget Woods was in even better position just a month ago at the U.S. Open. Tied for the lead, he played in the last group on Saturday at Olympic, but a dismal 75 knocked him out of contention. He was never a threat in the final round, stretching the drought to four years since his last major championship in 2008.

Woods is feeling good about his chances at this claustrophobic course in northwestern England. He avoided the dreaded bunkers over his first 35 holes, and bailed himself out when he finally found the sand. He's missed only two fairways off the tee, showing time and time again he's willing to sacrifice distance for the sake of control. He's largely avoided the treacherous rough, knowing that's like assessing yourself a penalty.

"I figured I had a game plan that I thought would fit well on this golf course, and I figured I could execute it," Woods said. "I've done that so far. It's just patience on a golf course like this."

But he's still got some work to do.

Snedeker, who had never even made the cut in three previous Open appearances, breezed through two near-perfect rounds, nary a bogey on his card. He shot a 64 for a 130 total, equaling the major championship record for lowest score through 36 holes.

Up to now, his best run in a major came at the 2008 Masters, where he faded to a tie for third and broke down in tears when it was over.

Maybe he'll be smiling this time, posing with the claret jug.

"It wasn't an easy day that day at Augusta," Snedeker recalled. "I kind of know what pressure feels like. Obviously, it's going to be a lot more over the weekend, but I've got something to fall back on."

Scott was nearly as good over the first two days. He put up another dazzling round, a 67 leaving him just one stroke off the lead he held after an opening 64.

Like Snedeker, the Aussie is still chasing his first major title.

"Why not me?" Scott said. "I felt very confident coming in here."

Over two calm days, Snedeker became the first player to go bogey-free in the opening two rounds of a major since Woods won at St. Andrews in 2000. Even more amazing? Snedeker hasn't hit into any of the 206 bunkers in two days.

Scott didn't put much significance into his position at the halfway point.

"You look at the names that are five and six shots back, and it means even less," he said.

The biggest name was Woods, who'll find out if his record in the majors still means anything. This was the eighth time he has opened a major with two rounds in the 60s, and he went on to win on the seven previous occasions ? including all three of his Open titles.

He was in the penultimate group Saturday with Thorbjorn Olesen, a 22-year-old Dane who won for the first time this year on the European Tour. He closed with two birdies, knowing that the last one would give him a 66 and a chance to play with Woods, his idol.

These pads come equipped with the impact technology of D3O, protecting you from liittle dings, to major wipeouts. The comfort lies largely, though, with the memory foam lining on the back of the D3O.

First Use Impressions => I have been using these for quite a few rides, and they are pretty darn comfortable. They have taken some decent tree bashes, and a couple of minor fallover tumbles, and they have worked fine. Make sure to get the sizing proper so they are nice and tight, since they do stretch a bit with usage. They are compact and easy to take on and off, making them simple to stow in your pack when they aren't needed. I wore them on a couple of extremely hot rides, and although I sweated like crazy, they seems to wick the moisture away and weren't overtly uncomfortable.

This offers added protection as well as an extremely comfortable fit. These pads also have strands of beaded silicone running the diameter of the inside to keep them in place during heavy exercise and sweating. These pads can be used in a huge variety of sports. So whether it's kayaking, mountain biking, sailing, snowboarding or any sport in between, go nuts with Demons new Soft Cap Pro X D3O.
