Stripe launches Connect: Can you hear the developers swoon ...

The payments industry has suddenly gone from an Internet full of ?1984?-like drones, all shuffling into work and installing PayPal, to a stunning time of innovation. Not only are a handful of companies gunning after various parts of the once-innovative monolith?s business, but they?re launching new features weekly.

It?s so fucking on.?And it?s about time. This is great news for developers, the Web and consumers. For PayPal? It?s only good news, if it somehow spurs it into a culture change.

Today, Stripe makes what CEO and co-founder Patrick Collison calls the biggest product announcement since the company was launched: Stripe Connect.

Not unlike Facebook connect, it does two things. It allows individual merchants on large marketplaces like Skillshare to connect via Stripe either to existing accounts or to create a new account in moments. Collison sees this as a huge potential market. ?This could help every online store front, every website never have to go get a merchant account again,? he said.

Stripe Connect also allows third parties to build more robust apps for sellers using Stripe?s data. Applications could include helping merchants prepare taxes, or proving more robust analytics on sales conversions.

When Collison first started to describe Stripe Connect, I thought he was going to be launching easy-to-sign up consumer accounts that could allow people to pay across accounts. That?s a remaining advantage for PayPal. The allure of enabling one-click payments across merchants is the reason that competitor Braintree recently bought digital wallet Venmo. Since Braintree just last week announced it had retooled to compete with Stripe?s instantaneous underwriting fee, it wouldn?t have been crazy for Stripe to answer back and compete with Braintree?s latest edge.

But it?s almost more interesting that Stripe isn?t locked in a feature-by-feature war, intense as this space is. Instead the company is keeping its head down, running its own race. Stripe has always been focused on being the most developer friendly payment option, and its developers were asking for these two features, Collison says.

When I asked what the move does for Stripe strategically, he was a little flummoxed and said, strategically, it gives developers what they were asking for. ?It adds a ton of value to the platform,? he says. ?People like to do richer things with data. We?re not particularly hatching a diabolical plot, we just want to make these transactions better.?

A lot of this is rooted in Stripe?s corporate DNA. While Braintree draws strength from CEO Bill Ready and his team?s experience in building financial platforms, Stripe is staffed by a highly international team of people that have spent their careers working on Internet infrastructure.

Both companies see payments as the last piece of the Web infrastructure that isn?t as modern and turnkey as it should be. But Braintree sees this from the point of view of finally being able to build the financial services product the Web deserves, and Stripe sees it from the point of view of how making this piece of Internet infrastructure as seamless as the rest of the Web.

It?s a subtle difference, but one that is at the core of each of the company?s different approaches, as they gun for the same end-game. The bull-case for Braintree is it gets financial services. The bull-case for Stripe is it gets the Internet. Braintree tends to obsess about customers; Stripe obsesses about developers. It?s not a surprise one is based in Chicago and one is based in Silicon Valley.??When we were conceiving of this product, we started to think about it on the level of what makes sense for the Internet, not about how to be a payments company? Collison says. ?We?re not necessarily from a financial background. We come from a background of how do we make Internet infrastructure better. Clearly payments data should not be locked up and siloed. That?s where this idea came from.?

And, honestly, I could make either bull-case. Whoever wins this multi-way battle will need an understanding of both spheres. And astoundingly, both customer service and developer relations are massive weaknesses for PayPal. At the end of the day the battle will play out around the world, as each tries to be the modern global payments standard.

Given Stripe is the one with the PayPal mafia DNA ? with investments from Peter Thiel and Elon Musk ? it?s interesting that this play is reminiscent of the early days of PayPal. After a floundering period when PayPal tried to find a business, eBay sellers sort of latched onto it, giving it a more clear and immediate reason to exist. PayPal and eBay had a symbiotic relationship, where eBay provided a test case for why PayPal was then so modern, and PayPal gave eBay what it?s sellers desperately needed: a way to take credit cards. And now, a big part of one of Stripe?s most important product launches to date is enabling payments on the modern interation of eBay ? companies where people can create their own small businesses peddling expertise and services.

Collison says this inspiration wasn?t the impetus for Stripe Connect ? it was responding to the users and trying to make transactions more data-rich. But he admits it?s an interesting coincidence.

Food Chemists Celebrate Tasty Centennial

60-Second Science

It's the 100th anniversary of the Maillard Reaction, perhaps the most important chemical reaction that takes place to enhance food's taste when we cook. Karen Hopkin reports.

More 60-Second Science

Nobel week?a fine time to celebrate science?s most notable achievements. As you raise your glass to this year?s laureates, why not toast one of chemistry?s most delectable discoveries. Because it?s the 100th anniversary of the Maillard reaction, without which toast would be just a boring piece of dry bread.?

As noted in the current issue of Chemical & Engineering News [Sarah Everts, The Maillard Reaction Turns 100], in 1912 Louis-Camille Maillard first described what happens when you cook sugars along with protein. Driven by the heat, these molecules react to produce a variety of savory smells and tastes, the good stuff in everything from grilled steak and French fries to dark roast coffee, maple syrup, and crusty bread.

The reaction takes place pretty much any time you cook, which makes it the most favored?and flavored?chemistry around.

Of course, the Maillard reaction is not all peaches and cream?or popcorn and caramel. The same chemistry can also create acrylamide, a potential carcinogen made when meat gets charred on the barbie. And so chemists continue to work adding flavor to foods while keeping them carcinogen-free. Now that?s a recipe that should win a ticket to Stockholm.

?Karen Hopkin

US chemists win Nobel for study of receptors

Two American researchers won the Nobel Prize in chemistry Wednesday for studies of protein receptors that let body cells sense and respond to outside signals like danger or the flavor of food. Such studies are key for developing better drugs.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said Robert Lefkowitz and Brian Kobilka made groundbreaking discoveries, mainly in the 1980s, on an important family of receptors known as G-protein-coupled receptors.

About half of all medications act on these receptors, including beta blockers and antihistamines, so learning about them will help scientists improve the way such drugs work.

The human body has about 1,000 kinds of such receptors, structures on the surface of cells that let the body respond to a wide variety of chemical signals, like adrenaline. Some receptors are in the nose, tongue and eyes, and let us sense smells, tastes and light.

"They work as a gateway to the cell," Lefkowitz told a news conference in Stockholm by phone. "As a result they are crucial ... to regulate almost every known physiological process with humans."

Lefkowitz, 69, is an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and professor at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. Kobilka, 57, worked for Lefkowitz at Duke before transferring to Stanford University School of Medicine in California, where he is now a professor.

'Comfortably numb'
Lefkowitz said he was fast asleep when the Nobel committee called, but he didn't hear it because he was wearing ear plugs. So his wife picked up the phone.

"She said, 'There's a call here for you from Stockholm,'" Lefkowitz told The Associated Press. "I knew they ain't calling to find out what the weather is like in Durham today."

He said he didn't have an "inkling" that he was being considered for the Nobel Prize. "Initially, I expected I'd have this huge burst of excitement. But I didn't. I was comfortably numb," Lefkowitz said.

Kobilka said he found out around 2:30 a.m., after the Nobel committee called his home twice. He said that he didn't get to the phone the first time, but that when he picked up the second time, he spoke to five members of the committee.

"They passed the phone around and congratulated me," Kobilka told AP. "I guess they do that so you actually believe them. When one person calls you, it can be a joke, but when five people with convincing Swedish accents call you, then it isn't a joke."

He said he would put his half of the 8 million kronor ($1.2 million) award toward retirement or "pass it on to my kids."

Solving the mystery
The academy said it was long a mystery how cells interact with their environment and adapt to new situations, such as when they react to adrenaline by increasing blood pressure and making the heart beat faster.

Scientists suspected that cell surfaces had some type of receptor for hormones.

Using radioactivity, Lefkowitz managed to identify the receptors ? including the receptor for adrenaline ? and started to understand how they work.

Kobilka and his team realized that there is a whole family of receptors that look alike ? a family now called G-protein-coupled receptors.

In 2011, Kobilka achieved another breakthrough when his team captured an image of the receptor for adrenaline at the moment when it is activated by a hormone and sends a signal into the cell. The academy called the image "a molecular masterpiece."

'Fantastic recognition'
The award is "fantastic recognition for helping us further understand the intricate details of biochemical systems in our bodies," said Bassam Z. Shakhashiri, president of the American Chemical Society.

"They both have made great contributions to our understanding of health and disease," Shakhashiri said. "This is going to help us a great deal to develop new pharmaceuticals, new medicines for combating disease."

Drugs such as beta blockers, antihistamines and various psychiatric medicines have been around for some time, but before Lefkowitz and Kobilka's discoveries, their impact on the human body wasn't fully understood, said Sven Lidin, chairman of the prize committee.

"All we knew was that they worked, but we didn't know why," Lidin said. There is hope that the Nobel-winning research will lead to new medicines, he added.

Mark Downs, chief executive of Britain's Society of Biology, said the critical role receptors play is now taken for granted.

"This groundbreaking work spanning genetics and biochemistry has laid the basis for much of our understanding of modern pharmacology as well as how cells in different parts of living organisms can react differently to external stimulation, such as light and smell, or the internal systems which control our bodies such as hormones," Downs said in a statement.

The U.S. has dominated the Nobel chemistry prize in recent years, with American scientists being included among the winners of 17 of the past 20 awards.

This year's Nobel announcements started Monday with the medicine prize going to stem cell pioneers John Gurdon of Britain and Japan's Shinya Yamanaka. Frenchman Serge Haroche and American David Wineland won the physics prize Tuesday for work on quantum particles.

The Nobel Prizes were established in the will of 19th-century Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite. The awards are always handed out on Dec. 10, the anniversary of Nobel's death in 1896.

From Radio NZ

German homeschooling family fail in asylum bid

A German family who came to New Zealand to avoid prosecution for homeschooling their children have failed in their bid for refugee status.

Gerno and Andrea Sch?neich claimed that the teaching of their four children about Darwinism, neo-Marxist critical theory and sex education in school was in conflict with their Christian beliefs.

The children have been homeschooled since arriving in New Zealand in 2008 and since applying for asylum Mr Sch?neich has gained a work visa to teach at a Christian school.

The Immigration and Protection Tribunal said there is no international right to homeschooling and the family was not being persecuted.

It said education includes the elimination of ignorance and the improvement of access to scientific and technical knowledge.

The tribunal said there is no international right to homeschooling and the prosecution the family faced for keeping their children away from school did not amount to persecution.

This is still up on the Human Rights website? but I am not sure that this is law in New Zealand at the? moment.*

Human Rights in New Zealand Today: Chapter 15: The right to education

(3) Parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their children.

  • Home schooling is possible for those who prefer it, on the condition that the standard of education is similar to that available in a registered school.

*It seems that NZ never adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, but instead passed its own law, the Human Rights Act 1993, which does not create a ?human right? to homeschool. )

Party Ideas: What Sort Of Party Will You Host? | Life Coach ...

Party ideas are many, but we tie ourselves to believing that there?s no alternative that can make the event better. The preparations that you are going to make for a party are dependent on the type of party you are to throw. So, you cannot prepare for a party if you don?t know the kind of party you would like to throw. However, it is difficult to identify the kind of party you want. Continue to read for some points that will guide you through when deciding the kind of party you want to host:

1. Is the party intended for one individual such as a graduation, welcome home party, birthday or wedding? If that?s the case, the honoured guest?s needs should be considered. The factors that you will need consider are; their availability, the guests they?d like to invite and their tastes. If you would like the party to be a surprise party, do not consult the honored guests on what they will want for the party. Instead, you need to consult the friends or relatives of the honoured guest on what he likes so the party will be a surprise yet a good one.

2. Hobbyist parties or award parties demand that like-minded people be involved when making party preparations. Some party ideas might demand the same.

3. Reunions are fun to host but they?re difficult to plan for. If the guests you expect to attend the party have to travel long distances, you need to plan the party in time. For instance, you?ll need to send out invitation letters many days in advance so they can plan the journey and adjust their schedule.

4. Themed parties such as fancy dress or Halloween parties can bring a lot of fun when held. Inform your guests on what is required of them in terms of the dress code.

5. You can make your dinner party different from the rest. You may either choose a potluck dinner party that will allow the guests to make a contribution to the meals, or a formal sit down dinner for eight folks. You may also host a backyard barbeque or a pizza while watching a Super Bowl match. If you?ve decided to try any of these methods, you ought to know the amount of guests attending the party and then come up with a budget that you?ll stick to. The foods and drinks should be sufficient.

The party ideas will work depending on how you handle the party and the sort of party you want to throw. If this is the first party you are hosting, it is good that you make it simple. In the invitation list, do not invite many guests to the party. However, if you are used to throwing big parties, there isn?t any reason to stop now. Just bear in mind you have to prepare early enough for it to be a success.
