Ubuntu Developer Preview for Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4 Arrives Feb. 21

Ubuntu Mobile

Canonical announced today that images and open source code for the smartphone version of Ubuntu will be released on Feb. 21.

The software will work on the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 smartphones, and is designed for enthusiasts and developers, Canonical said. Ultimately, the company wants developers to be able to familiarize themeselves with the OS and start developing apps.

Canonical said tools to help users switch, or flash, theirs phones to the Touch Developer Preview of Ubuntu will also be released on Feb. 21. Those attending Mobile World Congress in Barcelona later this month can bring their Nexus smartphones to the Canonical booth (booth number 81D30, App Planet Hall 8.1), where staff will flash your phones.

"Our platform supports a wide range of screen sizes and resolutions. Developers who have experience bringing up phone environments will find it relatively easy to port Ubuntu to current handsets" Pat McGowan, who lead the integration effort that produced the images being released, said in a statement. "We look forward to adding support for additional devices for everyday testing and experimentation."

Canonical also published App Design Guides to allow developers to create apps for the full range of Ubuntu platforms.

"This release marks the threshold of wider engagement - both with industry and community," said Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Ubuntu. "For developers, contributors and partners, there is now a coherent experience that warrants attention. The cleanest, most stylish mobile interface around."

Canonical first unveiled Ubuntu for smartphones in early January. The company is targeting two key audiences with the release - the enterprise market and basic, entry-level smartphones.

The developer preview will be accessible via wiki.ubuntu.com/TouchInstallProcess, starting next week.
